Albany Devils News Release
ALBANY, NY - After a two week hiatus from Times Union Center, the Albany Devils gave the 4,815 fans in attendance something to cheer about Saturday. Four unanswered goals lifted the Devils to a 4-1 win against their Northway Rival, the Adirondack Phantoms. Albany improves to 26-16-3-5 overall and 14-8-2-1 at home.
"We were talking on the bench earlier that it feels like we haven't been here in forever," said captain Rod Pelley. "It was like 'whoa we're back at home!'" I guess with the break and only playing once before it felt like awhile. It was definitely nice to get home and it was a good crowd tonight. We were happy we could give them a good game."
Each of the Devils lines contributed a goal in their 60-minute team effort. Pelley joined Tim Sestito, Mattias Tedenby and Joe Whitney on the scoresheet. Albany forecheck set the tone and sparked its four-goal outburst.
"They're a team that we key on as far as getting on their forecheck and getting on their defense," Pelley said. "That's how we play when we're playing well: we're always on the puck and playing persistent hockey."
"When we're skating, getting pucks in behind and have four lines going, that's what we're capable of doing," added Head Coach Rick Kowalsky. "That certainly helped early on in the first period."
After falling behind 1-0 after just 2:06, Harri Pesonen forced an offensive-zone turnover and setup Sestito for his 10th goal of the season and fifth against the Phantoms at 4:48 of the first period.
David Wohlberg and Mike Hoeffel's tenacity in the corner helped win a puck battle that led to Pelley's tally at 7:15 of the second
From there Tedenby scored off a rebound minutes later at 9:34 and Whitney sealed the win with 1:58 remaining.
Goaltender Scott Wedgewood watched as the Devils outshot the Phantoms, 31-16, limiting Adirondack to five shots in the first, seven in the second and four in the third. By the end, Wedgewood made 15 saves for his eighth win of the season.
The Devils conclude their weekend with a 3 pm outing against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers Sunday at Webster Bank Arena. The game can be streamed online or on mobile devices at ahllive.com. Additionally, the contest will be broadcast on 104.5 "The Team" ESPN Radio.
