D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, DC (June 21, 2004) - D.C. United forward Thiago Martins today underwent ACL surgery, repairing damage to the 27-year-old Brazilian's left knee. Martins underwent surgery on the same knee in December 2003 and had recently returned to full training after being cleared to play by D.C. United team physicians. Towards the end of United's practice session on June 8th, Martins planted and twisted on his left leg, re-injuring his knee. The surgery was performed this morning by Dr. Chris Annunziata at Commonwealth Orthopaedics. Martins is expected to miss the remainder of the 2004 MLS campaign.
"Although we are saddened that Thiago has re-injured his ACL, we are pleased that his surgery was a success," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "Thiago is a determined person who works extremely hard and we are confident that he will fully recover from this injury. We look forward to his return for the 2005 season."
Martins joined D.C. United as a free agent from the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (A-League) on September 11th, 2003. He made six appearances for United in 2003, starting four matches. Prior to joining the Black-and-Red, Martins completed a stellar year with the Riverhounds. He finished as the A-League's top scorer with 51 points on 22 goals and seven assists. The performance earned him honors as the A-League MVP for 2003.
