They Tied; Flint Wins In Shootout

April 4, 2004 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Elmira Jackals News Release

The Jackals scored first Saturday night in Flint as rookie Rob McFeeters scored his second goal in as many nights, and second of his pro career, to give Elmira a 1-0 lead, just 3:32 into the first period.

Elmira held that lead until three minutes into the second period when Colin Embley tipped home a shot on the power play to tie the game at one. Two minutes later, Sylvain Dufresne blasted a shot from the point just inside the far post to give Flint its first lead 2-1. But the Jackals would strike back just before the media timeout. Carl Drakensjo equalized by scoring a short-handed goal at 9:44, from Simon Poirier and Eddy Lowe. The goal was set up as all four Jackals on the ice touched the puck. Trevor Burgess picked off a pass to the right of Ryan McIntosh's net, skated to center ice, and passed back to Poirier on the left side of the blue line. Poirier found Eddy Lowe in the middle of the ice, skating towards the offensive zone, and Lowe cleverly slipped a pass into space that allowed Drakensjo to navigate around a defenseman and pick up the puck on the top of the right face-off circle. Drak then buried his shot in the top shelf, up over the glove of goaltender Jonathan Forest.

In the third period the two teams skated hard for twenty minutes, but it was the goaltenders that took charge, forcing a shootout.

In the shootout, Flint scored first to take a 1-0 lead but Eddy Lowe's five-hole shot eluded Forest to level the score. Back and forth the teams went, both being upstaged by the net minders until the final shooter in round nine. In the last inning of a regulation baseball game, Dominic Perna beat McIntosh to secure the extra point for Flint.

McIntosh shined in net, stopping 28-of-30 shots, while Forest made 23 saves on 25 shots.

Elmira will finish of the weekend with a 5:10 pm Sunday contest at Walker Arena in Muskegon.
