Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
Traverse City, MI, November 2, 2005: The Traverse City Beach Bums are proud to introduce Suntan's Dreaming of Spring Reading Club, sponsored by Traverse City State Bank. Students at participating elementary schools in the Grand Traverse Area will be able to read around the bases with the Beach Bums' lovable mascot Suntan this winter, as he curls up with his favorite books and dreams of spring. Each child will receive a Reading Club poster to record all of the books they read. By completing five books readers will earn a base hit. Every additional five books will earn readers extra bases and some awesome rewards. Readers can hit it out of the park by finishing 20 books and earn a FREE ticket to a special Beach Bums game next summer where they will be allowed to run the bases for real after the game.
A passionate reader herself, this community program is particularly special to Beach Bums' Owner/CFO Leslye Wuerfel. Although there is no question that one of the Wuerfels' goals in bringing baseball to Traverse City was to build a championship caliber team, perhaps more important however was their vision to create a partnership with community that would benefit both for years to come. According to Leslye, "One of the most wonderful things about the Beach Bums is the opportunity the team will afford us to give back. Giving back through the reading club I think rewards us as much as the children involved."
Although the brainchild of Wuerfel, it is the generous partnership of Traverse City State Bank that has allowed the Beach Bums to take this program to the next level by adding prizes such as book totes and book marks for readers as they work their way around the bases. For Traverse City State Bank President, Pete Correia, the Reading Club presented a unique opportunity to combine his passion for sports with the Bank's strong commitment to community service and education. For Correia this was a "partnership to good to pass up."
Both Leslye Wuerfel and Pete Correia are scheduled to present the Reading Club and Suntan to the community for the first time Monday, November 21st at 9:00 at Blair Elementary School. Media is welcome to attend. For more information on the Reading Club and on related appearances in the community, please contact Nicolle Meyer at Nicolle@traversecitybeachbums.com.
The Traverse City Beach Bums is an independent minor league baseball team. The Beach Bums are a member of the Frontier League, which consists of teams across the Midwest. The Traverse City Beach Bums will begin play at Wuerfel Park spring of 2006 and will play 48 home games at their brand new stadium in Blair Township.
