Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
LYNCHBURG, VA - The Pelicans' bats came alive for the second straight night as Myrtle Beach topped the Lynchburg Hillcats 11-1 to assure a series win.
Jacob Thompson set the tone for the Birds on the mound as he cruised through seven shutout innings while his offense rallied behind him. Offensively, the Pelicans used a pair of two run innings, a three run frame and a four spot to claim the victory.
In the top of the third, the Pelicans broke the scoreless tie when Chad Lundahl was singled home by C.J. Lee. Two batters later Cole Miles would score on a Freddie Freeman double to put Myrtle Beach up 2-0. The Pelicans would go up 4-0 on a two-run single by Jon Mark Owings which plated Donell Linares and Benji Johnson in the top of the fourth.
In the top of the fifth, a two-out error by Hillcat second baseman Jose De Los Santos opened the door for a three-run frame. After the error, which scored a run, Johnson drove home two with a double to put the Pelicans up 7-0.
The game stayed that way until the eighth. With two on, Miles tripled home Owings and Lee. Two batters later, Miles scored with Freeman on a double by Jason Heyward. The Pelicans combined to pound out 11 runs on 11 hits in the 11-1 win. That margin of victory is the largest for the Pelicans this season and it also marks the first time the Birds have scored in double digits. This also marks just the second time this season that the Pelicans have won three straight games.
Thompson (2-1) picked up the win while allowing just three hits over seven shutout innings. He struck out eight and walked just two. Bryan Morris (2-2) took the loss allowing seven of the Pelicans' 11 runs, but only four were earned. He also walked three and struck out just one.
The Pelicans go for the series sweep tomorrow night as they send right hander Erik Cordier to the mound against lefty Justin Wilson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Lynchburg City Stadium in Lynchburg, VA.
