February 21, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, MB. - They built it and like in the movie 'Field of Dreams' they will come!
In this case, members of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will be travelling south of the city next week to play a special game of shinny at the backyard rink, belonging to the Nicol family of Brandon.
The Nicols were chosen this year's The Home Depot Backyard Rink Winners Wednesday from a long list of entries received at BDO Fan Services (during Wheat Kings' home games) or online at www.wheatkings.com and www.homedepotbackyardrink.com
In addition to having the opportunity to meet the Wheat Kings, the Nicols will receive treats and prizes from The Home Depot in Brandon.
Big fans of both the Wheat Kings and National Hockey League's Winnipeg Jets, Kerri and Kurt Nicol have two hockey playing sons - 8-year old Reid and 6-year old Kale.
Kale is a member of the Tim Bits Leafs while Reid is in his first year novice, skating with the Pizza Hotline Penguins.
The Nicols list local products Connor Gutenberg, Ty Lewis and captain James Shearer as their favorite Wheat Kings.
"My husband Kurt and I were so excited to share the news with our two sons," says Kerri after learning that they had been named this year's The Home Depot Backyard Rink winners. "Kurt has spent countless hours designing and constructing this rink for his boys."
"The boys are out on their rink every chance they get," she went on to say. "Out here we're all about hockey."
The Nicols live south of the city in the Brandon Hills.
The Wheat Kings, who are coming off a weekend that saw them split a home and home series with Prince Albert, before dropping a Monday afternoon game to Moose Jaw, will be hitting the road later this week for a pivotal four game road trip.
Brandon will play four games in five nights, including three in three this weekend in Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Calgary.
Next home game for the Wheat Kings, who are currently 31-23-3-2 on the season, is Friday, March 2nd against the Warriors.
Tickets to all of Brandon's remaining home games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office. Fans can also order online at www.keystonecentre.com or by calling (204) 726-3555.
