Broncos Rise in Latest CHL Top 10 Rankings

February 21, 2018 - Western Hockey League (WHL) News Release

Toronto, ON - The Canadian Hockey League today announced the week 22 edition of the CHL Top-10 Rankings for the 2017-18 season. The weekly rankings of the CHL's Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

The Moose Jaw Warriors held steady in the second spot for another week, their 20th straight week on the CHL Top 10 Rankings. The Warriors were locked in a heated battle with one of their Trans-Canada rivals, the Regina Pats, for three matches this week, winning the opener before being defeated in back-to-back games. They did manage to close out their four-game week with a split though, doubling up the Brandon Wheat Kings by a 6-3 final Monday as a part of Family Day. Forward Jayden Halbgewachs (San Jose Sharks) remained steadfast in his charge up the Western Hockey League scoring ladder, tallying 10 points (5G-5A) in his last four games to lead the WHL's top club. The Warriors will face an important road battle Wednesday, February 21 (7:00 p.m. CST) as they take on the Swift Current Broncos for the second last time in the regular season series.

Wednesday's matchup is an important one for both the Warriors and the Broncos, who moved up a spot to fourth in the latest rankings, their 19th straight week on the charts. With a 2-0-1 record from their three games this week, the Broncos closed the gap on the Warriors to two points. Winners of 10 straight home games, the Broncos will play half of their final 12 games, including Wednesday's contest against the Warriors, in Speedy Creek and will be favoured heavily in those matches. Captain Glenn Gawdin (Calgary Flames) has taken over sole possession of first place in the WHL scoring race with 111 points (51G-60A) in 59 games. His 19 points (11G-8A) in eight games also leads the league in the month of February.

Climbing up the rankings as well were the Everett Silvertips, who became the first team from the Western Conference to clinch a playoff berth Tuesday, and seeded themselves into the eighth spot in their third straight week on the charts. The Silvertips split a home-and-home series against the Seattle Thunderbirds, shutout the Kamloops Blazers by a 4-0 score and secured their 15th straight trip to the post-season with a 4-1 defeat of the Spokane Chiefs. With a 7-1-1-1 record in their last 10 games, the Silvertips will now work towards capturing the U.S. Division crown when they head north to battle the Vancouver Giants on Friday, February 23 (7:30 p.m. PST).

Earning an honourable mention this week were the Kelowna Rockets, who regained their lead in the B.C. Division from the Victoria Royals by going 2-1-0-1 in a four-game stretch. Kelowna's pair of heroes from the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship in captain Cal Foote (Tampa Bay Lightning) and Canadian captain Dillon Dube (Calgary Flames) have been impressive this month, with 13 points each in the team's 10 games in February. Dube has seven goals and six assists in that span while Foote has four goals and nine assists. The Rockets will continue their four-game home stand on Friday, February 23 (7:05 p.m. PST) when the Thunderbirds come to Prospera Place for the final time in the regular season.
