Oshawa Generals News Release
The Oshawa Generals earned a 5-2 win over the Belleville Bulls tonight at the Yardmen Arena. Tonight was the first time these two teams have met this year and showed signs of a rivalry beginning with a very physical game.
Kenny Appleby stood in net for the Generals tonight with Charlie Graham in for the Bulls. Both teams were evenly matched for the first few minutes of the period, but it was the Generals who got on the scoreboard first. After a penalty on Ryan Elie for roughing, Mitchell Vande Sompel fed a pass to Michael Dal Colle who sniped one past Graham for Oshawa. As the league-leading defenseman in points, Vande Sompel's assist gave him his 19th point of the season. An interference call on Hunter Smith put the Bulls on their first power play of the game but the Generals worked hard to prevent any scoring opportunities. Almost 12 minutes into the game, Stephen Harper took a turn in the penalty box for slashing. The Generals showed their power play strength with a quick goal by Hunter Smith from Cole Cassels to put the Gens up 2-0. A messy line change from the Generals sent Dal Colle to the box for too many men on the ice and the Bulls took advantage of the power play with a goal by Jordan Subban, assisted by Adam Laishram. The first period wrapped up with Oshawa leading shots on goal 14-9 and leading the game 2-1.
The two teams entered the third period showing lots of energy with some quick plays. A slashing call on Bricknell gave the Generals their third power play and a chance to produce, which they certainly did. Josh Sterk put the puck in the net with a quick wrist shot, assisted by Hertzberg and Dal Colle. Sterk's goal made it four power play goals of the night and put the Generals at 3 for 3 on the power play. Manchurek had a close scoring chance in the third but was unable to find the net. A hooking penalty on Carlisle gave the Bulls a chance on the power play but the Generals worked hard defensively. Play was back and forth for the remainder of the period with no whistle for a few minutes. Both teams looked exhausted near the end of the second and things started to get rough. With less than a minute left in the second period, Dal Colle had a breakaway chance but hit the post. After 40 minutes the Generals led shots on net 19-14, with only five shots for each team in the second period.
Things started to get rough between the teams in the third period. A huge hit from Gustavsen four minutes in shook up Vande Sompel who was slow to get up. Cassels didn't like the hit and went after Gustavsen, and the two went at it. Cassels got two minutes for instigating a fight, which puts the Bulls on the power play. the roughness continued but it was Belleville who found the net first in the third with a goal by Harper, assisted by Andrew Ming and David Tomasek.
The frustration was obvious between the teams with a few hits between Smith and Hefferman who both got two minutes for roughing. Cassels also got two minutes for instigating, five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct, which forced him to leave the game. Minutes later, Vande Sompel showed his frustration on Gustavsen and received two minutes for roughing. The power play for the Bulls didn't last long as Subban high sticks Latour and takes his turn in the box. The slow pace of the game continued with all of the penalties until Tobias Lindberg found the net with assists from Latour and Brown to put the Generals up 4-2. Gustavsen had a scoring chance but Appleby made a huge save to stop it. With just over a minute left in the game, Latour found his way around Harper and made it 5-2 with an empty net goal. Hertzberg received the final penalty of the game for cross checking but the Generals stood strong and came out on top.
The Generals outshot the Bulls 28-25 and once again showed why they have the second strongest power play in the league. The Generals will take on the Bulls again tomorrow night at 6:05p.m. at the GM Centre where Belleville will look for redemption.
