Zebulon, NC- The Carolina Mudcats (20-36) dropped a close contest to the Tennessee Smokies Saturday night at Five County Stadium, falling by a score of 5-4 in the series opener.

Carolina starter Luis Montano (L, 0-5) made his longest start since his promotion to Double-A, pitching 6 1/3 innings while allowing five earned runs on 12 hits. Joe Krebs shut down the Smokies for 2 2/3 innings out of the bullpen while striking out three.

The Smokies pounded out 13 hits, converting them into five runs. Four Tennessee batters had multiple base knocks, led by Tony Thomas' three hits. Thomas went 3-4 on the night while scoring a run and driving in two.

Chris Carpenter started for the Smokies, allowing three earned runs during five innings on the hill for Tennessee. Alex Maestri (W, 4-2) allowed an earned run in two innings in relief of Carpenter. Brian Schlitter (S, 19) pitched his way around three base runners in the final two frames to earn the save.

Logan Parker led the offensive charge for Carolina while going 2-2 with 2 RBI. Carson Kainer also drove in a pair of runs.

Carolina looks to rebound at 2 PM Sunday afternoon at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats send southpaw Tom Cochran (4-5, 3.29) against fellow lefty Jeremy Papelbon (4-5, 3.26) of the Smokies.
