
Smokies Win 5-4 in Carolina Saturday Night

Zebulon, NC- The Tennessee Smokies keep the playoff drive in full swing with a Saturday night win at Five County Stadium, beating the Carolina Mudcats 5-4 in the series opener. The win keeps the Smokies one game behind West Tenn with only fourteen contests remaining. Starlin Castro's run scoring double in the seventh inning put Tennessee ahead to stay.
Chris Carpenter started for Tennessee, yielding three earned runs during 5.0 innings. Alex Maestri allowed an earned run in two innings in relief of Carpenter and got the win. Brian Schlitter collected his 19th save working his way around three base runners in the final two innings to earn the save.
Sunday afternoon at 2pm a couple of left-handers are scheduled to start game two of the series. Tom Cochran (4-5, 3.29) will pitch for Carolina against the Smokies Jeremy Papelbon (4-5, 3.26).
