Everett AquaSox News Release

EVERETT, Wash . - The Everett AquaSox got a strong pitching performance out of Jeffeson Medina and scored six times in the fourth inning to start the second half of the Northwest League season on the right foot, topping the Boise Hawks by a final of 6-0 Tuesday at Everett Memorial Stadium.

The AquaSox, who struggled to an 11-27 record in the season's first half and set a NWL mark for the most losses in a half-season since the league went to the two-half format in 2010, were in control throughout Tuesday's second half opener thanks to Medina (1-4). The Venezuelan right-hander tossed six shutout innings to pick up his first win in seven starts for Everett. He allowed only three hits while walking three and recording a career-high six strikeouts. He did not allow a runner past second base.

The Frogs backed their starting pitcher with their highest offensive output in a week as Everett blew open a scoreless game with a six-run fourth inning. James Alfonso singled to get things started and came around to score the first run on three wild pitches by Hawks starter Trevor Clifton. Jordan Cowan followed Alfonso with a walk and scored on an infield single by Austin Cousino. After a walk to Adam Martin loaded the bases and ended Clifton's night, Nate Tenbrink, making a rehabilitation start from the Class-AAA Tacoma Rainiers, dealt the decisive blow with a grand slam on the first pitch from reliever Brad Markey.

After that, it was all about pitching as the teams traded zeroes the rest of the way. Logan Bawcom, also on a rehabilitation assignment from Tacoma, pitched the seventh and Cruz Pereira worked a scoreless eighth and ninth for the AquaSox. Markey gave up the grand slam to Tenbrink, but not much else, allowing just one more hit over the next 2.1 innings. Tommy Thorpe, of Vancouver, WA, came on for Boise in the seventh and struck out four straight while pitching two scoreless innings. Everett had just six hits in the game, but it was enough to pick up the win. Cousino and Alfonso were both 2-4 with a run scored for the 'Sox.

Clifton (2-1) took the loss for the Hawks. He pitched 3.2 innings, allowing five runs on four hits. He walked four, three in the six-run fourth, and struck out three. He also threw three wild pitches in the fourth to key the Everett rally. Boise did not have a hit after the sixth inning.

The AquaSox (12-27 overall, 1-0 second half) and Hawks (22-17, 0-1) continue their second half-opening series Wednesday at Everett Memorial Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05, weather permitting, as two pitchers still looking for their first professional wins square off. Everett's Lukas Schiraldi (0-1, 4.91) will start against Boise's Josh Conway (0-0, 3.12).
