Birmingham wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on Friday night, scoring three times in the top of the first inning. The Barons received a Josh Richmond RBI double, a RBI infield single from Rangel Ravelo and a Christian Marrero RBI single to take a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Jacksonville answered back with a run in the bottom of the first, as Austin Barnes scored on Alex Burg's sacrifice fly to make it a 3-1 Barons lead after one inning of play.
The Barons added to their lead when Kevan Smith came in to score on Chris Curley's RBI fielder's choice, extending Birmingham's lead to 4-1 in the top of the fourth.
That 4-1 score held up until the top of the ninth inning, when Luis Sierra plated Jeremy Farrell with a two-out RBI single to extend Birmingham's to 5-1 late in the ballgame.
After the play, two separate benches-clearing brawls broke out between the two clubs. Matt Ramsey, Wilfredo Gimenez and manager Andy Barkett were ejected for the Suns, while Jeremy Farrell, Michael Earley and Josh Richmond were ejected for the Barons during the 19-minute delay.
The Suns will now travel to Montgomery to begin a five-game series with the Biscuits, with first pitch set of Saturday night's series-opening game set for 6:35 p.m. CT (7:35 p.m. ET).
