Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK - The Chicago Cubs announced a series of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Tennessee Smokies roster prior to tonight's contest against the Mississippi Braves at Smokies Stadium.
Outfielder Jorge Soler has been transferred from Tennessee to Triple-A Iowa. The 22-year-old becomes the seventh 2014 Smokies player to be promoted this season after posting a .415 batting average (27-65) with nine doubles, one triple, six homers and 22 RBI in 22 games with Tennessee. The No. 41 overall prospect according to Baseball America before this season, Soler was named the Southern League Hitter of the Week on July 14 thanks in part to a two-homer game on July 13 against the Jacksonville Suns at Smokies Stadium.
In a corresponding move, infielder Lars Anderson has been transferred to Tennessee from Triple-A Iowa. In 34 games with the I-Cubs this year, the 26-year-old compiled a .287 mark (25-87), adding four homers and 19 RBI. Anderson sports Major League experience, having played with the Boston Red Sox in parts of three seasons between 2010-12 and has collected eight hits, including a double and four RBI in 30 total games in The Bigs. The left-handed slugger was signed by the Cubs as a Minor League free agent in January of 2014.
Tennessee's active roster stands at 25.
The Smokies are slated to take on Mississippi and can clinch a series victory with a win tonight, with first pitch set for 7:15 p.m. at Smokies Stadium. Tennessee is expected to give the ball to RHP Pierce Johnson (2-4, 3.35), while the M-Braves are anticipated to counter Johnson with RHP Ryan Weber (3-3, 4.38)
Tickets for tonight's game and all remaining 2014 Smokies home games are still available and can be purchased online at www.smokiesbaseball.com, or by calling the Smokies Ticket Office at (865) 286-2300.
