Salem RidgeYaks News Release
Salem, VA-The Salem Avalanche, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Houston Astros, got a two-run double from Justin Tellam in the sixth and four innings and a third of scoreless relief en route to a 4-3 win on Memorial Day against Wilmington on Lewis-Gale Medical Center Field at Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. Tellam, who missed two weeks with an injury, notched his third and fourth RBI of the year for the Avs (21-27) in their win over the Blue Rocks (24-25).
The first lead of the game went to Wilmington in the visitors' half of the third as Chris McConnell's double-play ground ball brought Jarrod Dyson home. Salem, though, wrested the lead away in the bottom of the inning. The first two batters reached as Roberto Mena walked and Travis Sweet singled to right. After a Greg Buchanan sacrifice bunt, Jordan Parraz's ground ball to short brought Mena in from third. Immediately after, Tim Torres volleyed a ball off the wall in left for an RBI double. He was thrown out at third, but Salem held a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, however, Wilmington equaled the Avs. Jeff Howell's RBI double evened the game at two. In the fifth, Wilmington re-took the lead as a one-out walk to Kurt Mertins became a run after a single, double steal and sacrifice fly.
The score held at 3-2 until Salem attacked Matt Kniginyzky in the sixth. With one out, Jimmy Van Ostrand dropped a single in left and Koby Clemens doubled down the left-field boundary. With both runners in scoring position, Tellam cracked a 1-2 pitch to left and handed Salem its winning margin.
The Avs bullpen duo of Chad Wagler and Bryan Hallberg secured the victory. Wagler (2-0) allowed just one hit in three innings and a third. Hallberg sent Wilmington away in order in the ninth for his first save of the season and the third of his career.
The Avalanche, with the win, broke a four-game losing streak to Wilmington. The Rocks and Avs convene again at 7:07 PM on Tuesday night as righty Corey Bass throws for Salem against Wilmington's Jason Godin.
