TODAY: The Potomac Nationals and Lynchburg Hillcats meet in the first game of a four-game...The P-Nats managed to earn a split in the four-game series with the Salem Avalanche, scoring three runs in the sixth inning yesterday to win 6-3...Potomac increased its lead over Frederick in the Carolina League Northern Division to 2.5 games as the Keys were swept by Myrtle Beach losing the finale 6-3.
TODAY'S STARTER: The Potomac Nationals send right-hander Craig Stammen to the mound in hopes of earning his first win of the season...Last time out Stammen lasted just 4 1/3 innings against the Wilmington Blue Rocks, giving up just one unearned run on three hits...The Versailles, Ohio-native struggled with his command walking four batters and throwing a wild pitch and has walked seven batters in his last 9 1/3 innings...The 24-year-old has not won as a starting pitcher since last July 20 against the Salem Avalanche...Stammen made his first start of the season against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans on May 5, tossing five scoreless frames...He has been solid since moving to the rotation, sporting a 1.77 ERA in four outings and limiting opposing hitters to just a .174 batting average against him...The former Dayton Flyer was the P-Nats Opening Day starter last season in Lynchburg and earned the victory in an 11-4 triumph.
VIEW FROM THE TOP: Today marks the 47th consecutive day the P-Nats have been in or had a share of the division lead since moving to the top spot on April 10...Last season the Nationals spent 31 consecutive days in first from April 5 through May 5...The P-Nats ended the first half in last place, 10 games under .500 and only saw first place for one day, June 21, after May 5.
CAT NIPPED: The Potomac Nationals come into today's game with the Lynchburg Hillcats with a 12-game winning streak in the series...The P-Nats have outscored the Cats 76-28 over that span...The last Lynchburg win in the series came in the Hill City on June 30, a 6-4 triumph a season ago...Potomac went 14-5 against Lynchburg last season, including a perfect 8-0 at home where the Nationals have won last nine game in the series...The last win by the Hillcats at the Pfitz came on July 15, 2006, 8-3, in game two of a doubleheader...The P-Nats swept the first series of the season between the two clubs on April 14-16.
FOUR MORE OR LESS: The Potomac Nationals will enter their fifth four-game series (all but one scheduled) of the season today against the Lynchburg Hillcats...Through the first four, the P-Nats have managed to split each and are 8-8 in four-game sets...Potomac has three more four-game series on its schedule at Lynchburg June 2-5, at home against Wilmington June 6-8, and at Frederick June 12-15...The Nationals were 4-1-6 in four-game series last season including two sweeps.
OFFENSIVE MELTDOWN: After Potomac poured on the offense, scoring 21 runs on 29 hits in just two games last weekend against Salem, the Nationals offense had been relatively quiet in the first three games of its series with the Avalanche...The P-Nats had been outscored 16-5 until yesterday the club's only win coming in a 1-0 shutout in game two of Friday night's doubleheader...In 48 games, Potomac has scored two runs or fewer 17 times (6-11).
BROWN BEAR OUT OF HIBERNATION: P-Nats outfielder Dee Brown is 4-for-7 with an RBI, two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base in his last two games...Saturday night he collected his first RBI since April 29 with a single into left in the eighth inning...It was the first RBI for the 25-year-old in 36 at-bats this month...Brown also had his first multi-hit game since April 18 when we went 3-for-4 against Wilmington...The former Central Florida Golden Knight was hitting just .118 (4-for-34) in his first 11 May games.
WILKIE WORKS WONDERS: Right-hander Josh Wilkie continued his scoreless innings streak by working two shutout frames in relief of Jhonny Nunez...The former George Washington Colonial has not allowed a run in 12 innings spanning 10 appearances...The 23-year-old has allowed 10 hits during the streak and has struck out 13 batters while walking only three.
