Salem, VA (May 26, 2008) - The Salem Avalanche, Advanced Class-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, invites all veterans and active duty / reserve military personnel to take in its 5:07 PM Memorial Day baseball game against the Wilmington Blue Rocks free of charge. Active and reserve military personnel -- and all veterans with a valid ID -- will receive a free ticket along with a voucher for a free hot dog during the game.

"The brave servicemen and women from the United States of America protect our freedom day in and day out, both stateside and abroad," said Avalanche VP / General Manager John Katz. "This is just a small token of our appreciation for putting themselves in harm's way to defend our nation, and to preserve our way of life."

Before the game, the Avalanche will celebrate the diligence of our military personnel as Patrick Henry High School's Junior ROTC will present the colors. Also, the Avalanche will have a moment of silence to honor the veterans who have lost their lives in defense of Old Glory, and to honor those serving stateside and overseas.

"Hall-of-Famers like Bob Feller and Ted Williams put their baseball careers aside to serve in the US Armed Forces during World War II," said Katz. "Without their sacrifice, and the sacrifices of brave men and women throughout the history of the United States, America would not be the land of the free and the home of the brave."
