Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

TODAY'S GAME AT A GLANCE: The Pelicans have followed a four-game losing streak with a four-game winning streak including their recently concluded sweep of the Frederick Keys to begin this week-long road trip. The Pelicans currently boast the best road record in the league at 19-9, and have compiled a series record of 6-1-1 away from the Grand Strand. The Warthogs have put together the second best home record, going 17-10 at Ernie Shore Field, trailing only Potomac's 17-7 mark at Pfitzner Stadium. Winston-Salem took two-of-three games from the Pelicans in their only other meeting of the season which was at BB&T Coastal Field (4/14-4/16).

TODAY'S STARTING PITCHERS: In a meeting of right-handers, Ryne Reynoso will make the start for Myrtle Beach against John Ely for Winston-Salem

Reynoso: Has dropped his last two decisions, despite pitching well in his last go-around. Lost in a ballgame the Pelicans ultimately were pummeled in, 13-2, the righty turned in five innings, allowing just a lone earned run on two hits. The 23-year old will be making his 10th start of the season and seventh away from BB&T Coastal Field. His spot in the rotation was missed the last time the Pelicans faced the Warthogs, and he will be making his first career start against the Warthogs tonight.

The Sun Valley, Idaho native was signed by the Braves on November 9, 2006. He played his college baseball at Boston College. In his first professional season, he was the closer for the Rome Braves. He secured a team-best nine saves in 40 total appearances.

Ely: Although not represented in his win-loss record, Ely has pitched well in 2008. He has lasted at least six innings in seven of his nine starts this season, including on 4/14 when he started against the Pelicans at BB&T Coastal Field. In that outing, Ely conceded three earned runs on seven hits and took his first loss of the season. His performance has been night and day at home opposed to the road. Ely has been dominant in four home starts, posting an ERA of 1.88 and his lone victory. On the road, he has struggled, enduring all five of his defeats, while sporting an ERA nearly 4 1/2 runs higher at 5.14.

Ely has made a quick jump to the Warthogs rotation after being selected out of the University of Miami (Ohio) in the third round of the 2007 draft. He recorded 26 wins in his three seasons for Miami, striking out a career-high 108 batters in his freshman season (2005).

DOWN THE HOME STRETCH: Although the 2008 All-Star Game is slated for June 24th, the first-half of the season actually comes to a close on June 15th. The Pelicans have 21 games remaining in the first have with a seven-and-a-half game lead over the Winston-Salem Warthogs.

UP AFTER 7, FORGET ABOUT IT: The Pelicans bullpen has been extra special this season in closing out games. The Pelicans hold a 24-2 record when they take a lead past seven innings. Even further, they have a 26-1 record when taking a lead into the ninth inning. The bullpen hasn't missed a beat with the promotion of closer Kevin Gunderson to Mississippi. LHP Bryan Dumesnil has stepped in and has picked up a save in his last three outings. That includes two-of-three of the birds victories over Frederick and three of Myrtle Beach's last four victories.

SOUPS ON: Slugger Eric Campbell returns to the Pelicans roster today, after lingering behind the club as they broke spring training camp. Campbell is presently rated among the Braves' top-30 prospects according to Baseball America. Last year with the Pelicans, the third baseman launched 14 home runs in just 81 games. In 2006, he led the Rome Braves with 22 long-balls in 116 games. Campbell was selected by the Braves in the second round of the 2004 draft out of Gibson Southern High School in Indiana.
