Oshawa Generals News Release
Team OHL faced off against Team Russia for the fourth game of the CIBC Canada Russia Series tonight at the Tribute Communities Centre. Team OHL came into the game for their second tilt of the series after grabbing a 3-1 victory over Russia in their opening game. Oshawa Generals Jack Studnicka, Serron Noel, and Giovanni Vallati laced up for Team OHL tonight as they looked to help bring the team their second win of the series.
1st Period:
The game opened with Team Russia getting a quick tally one minute into the game, giving them a 1-0 lead over Team OHL. Looking to get back some momentum, Ryan Merkley (Guelph Storm) threw a huge open-ice hit on a Team Russia forward shortly after the goal. The physicality continued to ramp up with Generals captain Jack Studnicka throwing a big hit in the offensive zone. At the eight-minute mark of the period, Gens forward Serron Noel drew a slashing penalty after a strong protection of the puck in Team Russia's end. Although they had a couple quality chances on net, Team OHL couldn't find the tying goal on the opportunity. With just over two minutes left in the period, Team OHL goalie Hunter Jones (Peterborough Petes) came up with a big stop on a Team Russia breakaway. However, with under a minute left in the first, Team Russia added to their lead to head into the second period up 2-0 over Team OHL.
2nd Period:
The opening half of the period saw the play go back and forth with both Team OHL and Team Russia getting some chances on the opposing team's net. At the twelve-minute mark of the period, Noel drew another penalty to put Team OHL back on the powerplay, but they weren't able to capitalize on the chance. Through the back half of the period, Team OHL generated a few dangerous scoring chances, but couldn't find the back of the net. With under a minute left in the second, Jones made a big save to prevent Team Russian from extending their lead, leaving Team OHL trailing 2-0 heading into the final period.
3rd Period:
The period began with a Team OHL penalty call to put them down a man. With a strong shorthanded effort, Team OHL killed off the penalty and kept Russia off the board. At just over seven minutes into the period, Team Russia put a shot top corner past Jones to increase their lead to 3-0. At the halfway mark of the period, Noel had an amazing chance from right in front of the net that he put just wide. With six minutes left in the game, things got worse for Team OHL when Russia added to their total with another goal. With a last minute powerplay, Team OHL tried to find the back of the net but were denied, giving Team Russia a 4-0 win.
