Coastal Bend Thunder News Release
Robstown, TX -- Thunder starter and Corpus Christi native, Toro Trevino delivered a phenomenal performance tonight at Fairgrounds Field. He set the tone early by shattering two bats in the top of the first. Trevino pitched 5 innings of scoreless ball and his only blemish was an unearned run in the top of the 6th. W. B. Ray High School's former star scattered 6 hits over his 6 innings of work in which he struck out 6 RoadRunner hitters and walked only 2.
Trevino was not the only highlight for the Coastal Bend Thunder this evening by any stretch of the imagination. Tonight's victory was truly an all-around team victory. The offense scored at least one run in 6 consecutive innings from the 3rd through the 8th. Only two Thunder starters did not record a hit. However, even those two batters, Joseph and Butler, contributed significantly, as each walked 3 times and scored a run apiece. Mejia, Zazueta, Vickers, and Chris Lewis each had 2 hits, and Mike Goss had 3, which included a triple.
Coastal Bend broke through first in tonight's contest plating 2 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Dustin Smith and Mike Goss followed Kevin Butler's leadoff walk with consecutive singles to load the bases with nobody out. Leivi Ventura reached on a fielder's choice to drive in Butler for the first run of the ballgame. With 2 outs and runners on first and second, Amadeo Zazueta's line drive single to right sent Smith home to give the Thunder a 2-0 advantage.
The Thunder offense put the pressure right back on the Edinburg defense in the bottom of the 4th. After Alfred Joseph started the inning with a walk, Chris Lewis drove him in from second on a single up on the middle to extend the Thunder lead to 3.
In the bottom of the 5th, Coastal Bend tacked on another run to make it a 4-0 ballgame. Chris Lewis belted a double down the leftfield line to score Zazueta, who doubled with one out.
Edinburg got on the board with a run of their own in the top of the 6th off Thunder starter Toro Trevino. Singles in the inning by Blue, Herreaud, and Flores led to the run for the RoadRunners. Trevino did an excellent job limiting the damage as he struck Angel German and Cameron McGuire with runners on first and third to get out of what could have been a big inning to preserve the 4-1 lead for Coastal Bend.
For the fourth consecutive inning, Coastal Bend pushed across at least 1 run. Following a Mike Goss triple with one out, Leivi Ventura drove a sacrifice fly to deep right centerfield to score Goss and give the Thunder a 5-1 lead.
Raul Trevino relieved Toro Trevino in the top of the 7th. After allowing the first 2 runners aboard, Raul coaxed Eric Gonzalez to bounce into a double play and Carlos Hereaud to hit into a fielder's choice with Thunder second baseman Chris Lewis fielding the grounder and stepping on second for the final out of the inning.
The Thunder offense was back at it once again in the bottom of the 7th. Bryan Vickers double following up a leadoff walk to Amadeo Zazueta. Chris Lewis took his base on a hit by pitch and Kevin Butler walked to force in a run from third. Dustin Smith hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Vickers from third to make it a 7-1 ballgame.
Edinburg benefited a Thunder miscue in the field in the top of the 8th. The RoadRunners scored a single run with 2 outs after loading the bases and closed the gap to 7-2.
Bryan Vickers added an RBI single in the bottom of the 8th to drive in Manny Mejia to end the scoring for both sides and make it an 8-2 ballgame.
Raul Trevino picked up the save after pitching the final 3 innings allowing only the 1 run on 1 hit and striking out 2.
With the win Coastal Bend moves to 14-11 and remains in second place. The Thunder will host game 2 of this 4 game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Fairgrounds Field.
