Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release

Harlingen - Alberto Cruz homered for the second-straight game as the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings beat the Amarillo Dillas 8-3 tonight at Harlingen Field to end a six-game losing streak.

The WhiteWings (11-14) got on the board against Ralph Roberts (1-1) right away. With one out in the first. Justin Holloway singled, Jonathan Poterson walked and Brian Nichols singled to load the bases. Cruz hit an RBI-single, leaving the bases loaded. One out later, Rafael Zorrilla walked to force in a run, making it 2-0.

The Dillas (13-12) tied it up against Maximino de la Cruz (1-2) in the top of the second. Terrance McClain and Trent Lockwood led off with singles. McClain moved to third on Lockwood's single. Lockwood then stole second. Andrew Wong grounded out to score McClain and move Lockwood to third. A wild pitch scored Lockwood.

That was it against de la Cruz, who scattered six hits and three walks while striking out three in six innings.

Cruz hit his fifth home run of the season with two outs in the third to give the WhiteWings a 3-2 lead that they would never relinquish.

In the bottom of the fourth, Stephen Ward drew a one-out walk and stole second. Agustin Septimo followed with an RBI-single, moving to second on the throw. Holloway hit a grounder to short that was bobbled, allowing him to reach. Poterson drew a nine-pitch walk to load the bases. Nichols followed with a two-run single, moving Poterson to third, from where he scored on a passed ball to make it 7-2.

Zorrilla led off the bottom of the fifth with a single and moved to second on an error by Willie James in left field. Casey Allen tried to lay down a sacrifice bunt, but Zorrilla was thrown out at third instead. Allen moved to second on a balk and to third on a two-out infield single by Septimo. The WhiteWings then attempted a double- steal. Catcher Justin Wenger threw to second. Septimo stopped between the bases to ensure Allen would have enough time to score. Septimo then realized no one was covering first base, so he raced back safely with the score 8-2 WhiteWings.

With two outs in the top of the eighth against Juan Peralta, Lockwood tripled and scored on a Wong double to make it 8-3.

The WhiteWings and Dillas play game two of this four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 at Harlingen Field. Right-hander Reymond Cruz (3-1) is expected to face right-hander Taylor Allen (1-2).
