Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings' 2009 Rookie Camp came to a close Thursday night at Westman Communications Group Place as Team Black upended Team White 7-3 to sweep the 2-day, three game series.

Earlier in the day, the Blacks came back to beat the Whites 5-4 thanks to goals from five different players.

In Thursday's night's game, Jordan DePape scored twice and set up another as Team Black scored five unanswered second period goals en route to the win. DePape, last year's Manitoba Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year was Brandon's third round selection in the 2007 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

Rounding out the scoring for Team Black were Tyrel Seaman, Kjell Reid, Dakota Conroy, Jeff Clark and Daniel Asham.

Former Portage Terrier Brenden Walker was one of three shooters to beat out 16-year old rookie goalkeeper Liam Liston in a losing cause. Dylan Kelly and Austin Lewis also scored for the Whites, who lost a 3-2 overtime decision on Wednesday.

In Thursday's early game, DePape, Seaman, Reid, Jens Meilleur and Jesse Sinatynski scored for the winners while Kelly, Jeff Olson, Cody Nelson and Michel Ferland replied for Team White.

Ferland is one of several local products hoping to make a lasting impression this week, in hopes of landing a spot with the WHL club.

"Both Wheaton (King) and (Mike) Ferland fit into a group of '92 forwards that is really deep and that's going to be one of the real battles of training camp is to assess those players...where they're at now and how much we think they would develop on our team this year," Wheat Kings' coach and general manager Kelly McCrimmon told the Brandon Sun's James Shewaga. "And in terms of the hardest decisions for us to make coming out of camp and the pre-season, that '92 forward and '93 forward group is really going to be one to watch."

A 6' 193 lb forward, Ferland finished third in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League scoring race last season with 45 goals and 85 points in 45 games. King meanwhile finished the year with 73 points in 42 games with the AAA Wheat Kings.

Now that Rookie Camp has come to an end, a number of rookie prospects will be invited to stay over this weekend as the hockey club's Main Camp begins on Friday morning.

The curtain will come down on Camp Sunday with the Wheat Kings' Annual Intrasquad Game. Puck drop is at 2 p.m.
