Taylor's Hits Two Homers, But the Birds Fall 12-8

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries scored seven runs over the final three innings, but the comeback effort fell short with the Birds dropping the final game of the three-game series against the Laredo Lemurs by the final score of 12-8 on Wednesday night at Sioux Falls Stadium.

Canaries starting pitcher Kris Regas battled for much of the night, holding a dangerous Laredo offense to just one run over the first five innings. The Lemurs took an early 1-0 lead against Regas in the top of the 1st inning after Drew Martinez reached base on a lead-off single, later scoring on a Dennis Phipps RBI sac-fly. 

The Canaries answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the 2nd inning when designated hitter Jake Taylor blasted his 8th homerun of the season over the wall in right-center. Cameron Monger backed that up with a one-out double, but the speedy outfielder was left stranded to end the inning.

Regas (4-5, didn't allow another run until the top of the 6th inning when he gave up four hits to the first five batters, including a grand-slam to Lemurs second baseman J.D. Pulfer. The blast gave Laredo their second lead of the night at 5-1, and knocked the veteran left-hander out of the game.

The Lemurs added to their lead in the top of the 7th inning against Canaries relief pitcher Madison Boer who gave up a lead-off homerun to left-fielder Ty Morrison.  The Lemurs put the first six batters of the inning on base, scoring four total runs in the inning, with Pulfer hitting his second homerun in as many at-bats to extend the lead to 9-1. 

The Bids put together a comeback attempt late in the game, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 7th after a Darwin Perez RBI sac-fly and a David Bergin RBI double. The Birds struck for two more runs in the bottom of the 8th on an Ethan Chapman RBI double and added three more runs in the bottom of the 9th inning on a Jake Taylor three-run homer.

Taylor finished the night going 2-for-3 at the plate with two homeruns, two walks, and three runs scored to go along with four RBI in the loss. Chapman also had a good night at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.

The Canaries entertained another good crowd on Wednesday night, bringing in 3,006 fans to the Birdcage. That puts the attendance total at 10,034 over the first three games of the five-game homestand.

The Birds are back in action on Thursday night when they open up a four-game, home and road series against their I-29 rivals, the Sioux City Explorers. Thursday night is also Thirsty Thursday at the Birdcage, with discounted beer prices available to fans until the end of the 7th inning.
