Roanoke Valley Vipers News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Roanoke Valley Vipers, member of the United Hockey League (UHL), took a 4-2 lead into the third period with the help of a hat trick from former Port Huron Beacon Josh Tataryn, but could not hold on as they surrendered the game-tying and game-winning goals to the Flags during the final three minutes and seven seconds of play, losing by a final score of 5-4.
Tataryn had the Vipers on the board early, scoring an unassisted goal just before the halfway mark of the first period. The Flags answered with two of their own from Brett Lutes and former Beacon Aaron Brand at the 12:48 and 16:53 marks of the period. With a minute and 38 seconds remaining before the first period buzzer, Vipers captain David Beauregard evened the score with a power play goal off assists from Jan Jas and rookie defenseman Alex Jerofejevs.
Tataryn, hungry for a win in his former town, began the second period with two goals, both assisted by rookies L.P. Martin and Matt Miller to give himself the hat trick. Vipers netminder Jamie Hodson, who replaced starter Shawn Conschafter for the final two periods of play after Conschafter was involved in a collision with Jas in the first period, kept the Flags silent during the second period.
The Vipers, going into the third period with a two-goal lead, surrendered a power play goal to Port Huron at 5:54 of the period. It seemed that the Vipers would to hang onto their one-goal lead as the minutes on the clock ticked away. However, Derrick Atkinson took the Vipers by surprise at the 16:53 mark as he tied the game at four apiece. With less than 30 seconds left to play, Jeff Cameron scorched the puck off the faceoff right past the reach of Hodson, as the Vipers looked on in disbelief. Hodson was pulled as Head Coach Jim Wiley sent out an extra attacker, but the Vipers never gained control of the puck and their time ran out. For the second night in a row, the Vipers offense found itself unable to produce during the third period of play.
The Vipers' record falls to 5-6-1, as they drop to third place in the Eastern Division, a point behind the Danbury Trashers, who earned their eleventh and twelfth points in a win Saturday night over the Adirondack Frostbite. The Vipers return home Wednesday, November 23 as the Elmira Jackals return to town. The puck drops at 7:05p.m. - bring out your family for a pre-Thanksgiving matchup!
