Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI, TX - Jason Tapp made 37 saves for Corpus Christi as the Rayz were outshot 39-14 but found a way to knock off the Mudbugs 3-2 on Friday night at the American Bank Center . Adam Hogg's deflection with just 2:56 remaining in the third period broke a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winner for the Rayz, became the first Southern Conference team to defeat the Mudbugs this season.
The loss prevented the Mudbugs from clinching the Northeast Division title heading into tomorrow night's contest at Laredo . Bossier-Shreveport could potentially clinch their fifth straight division championship tomorrow with a win over the Bucks. The Rayz have now won back-to-back games for the first time since New Year's Eve.
Corpus Christi notched the game's first goal in this one after a defensive zone giveaway by the Mudbugs. As the puck squirted out front, Joe Blaznek poked it into the net for a 1-0 Rayz advantage. The Bugs drew even just 1:02 later when Karlis Zirnis circled the net and fed a pass to Jason Campbell, who roofed it past Tapp for his second of the year and a 1-1 tie after one period.
Just 55 seconds into the second period, Chris Brassard's shorthanded goal gave Bossier-Shreveport the lead. Brassard had the puck on a 2-on-1 with Zirnis when he faked the slapshot and then buried it behind a sprawled out Tapp for a 2-1 Bugs advantage. Later in the period though, a nice wraparound goal from Nicklas Lindberg tied it up again for Corpus Christi .
Neither team could get the edge in the third period as Tapp made a number of nice saves to keep Bossier-Shreveport from getting back on the scoreboard. Then with just 2:56 left in the contest, Hogg would tip a point blast from Chris Mei for the game-winner and a 3-2 Rayz win. That shot was the only one Corpus Christi got in the final period.
The Mudbugs outshot the Rayz 16-7 in the first period, 11-6 in the second and 12-1 in the third for a final shot advantage of 39-14. Bossier-Shreveport finished 0 for 3 on the powerplay while Corpus Christi missed on its only man advantage.
The Mudbugs will now head to Laredo for their last of three regular season meetings with the Bucks. The Bugs are 2-0 in the first two battles with Laredo , outscoring them 8-3 in those wins. Opening faceoff is set for 7:30 pm at the Laredo Entertainment Center , with pregame coverage set to get going at 7:10 on 1130 AM KWKH.
