As the regular season winds down, the Bucks are close to clinching the number one seed in the Southern Conference playoffs. Coming into tonight Laredo needs a combination of seven points (Bucks wins and/or ARZ/ODE losses) to clinch the top seed in the South.
The Bucks are 2-1 on their season-long five-game home stand, thanks to a 3-1 win over Corpus Christi last Saturday. Three different Bucks tallied goals in the win, with Dustin Traylen setting aside 30 of 31 Rayz shots to pick up his 22nd win in net.
Laredo, who is 7-2-1 in their last 10 games, has just seven regular season games remaining until the playoffs.
Not only are the Bucks trying to reach the top of the Southern Conference, Jeff Bes is trying to reach the top in the CHL scoring race. Coming into tonight Bes (42-52=94) is second in the league in scoring, five points back of Arizona's Alex Leavittt (31-68=99). Bes is looking for his second CHL scoring title, having won the crown in the 2003-04 season (117 points).
Laredo looks to continue their dominance over Rio this season, having a 9-1 record so far against the Killer Bees.
Rio comes into tonight's game nearing the end of a forgettable season on the ice. The Killer Bees are in danger of finshing this season with the least amont of wins in their five-year franchise history. With 10 games remaining the Bees have only 14 wins, five shy of their previous low of 19 during their second campaign in 2004-05.
Last week the team announced that head coach Paul Fixter will return next season for a third year behind the bench in Rio.
The Bees enter tonight's game 4-6 in their last 10, including a 3-1 week last week where their only setback was a 5-3 loss to Austin on Sunday.
After tonight the Bucks will host league rival Bossier-Shreveport on Saturday night at the LEC. It will be Powell Watson Million Dollar Night at the LEC. The Bucks will be raising money for the Children's Advocacy Program, and Powell Watson will match the firsr $1,000 raised. Powell Watson will host a tailgate party outside the LEC starting at 5:30pm. There will be '08 Powell Watson vehicles on display, and free fajita tacos. During the tailgate party fans can register to win huge prize from Powell Watson. Saturday night will also be the final Bucks prizs hunt of the season, with up to $5,000 in prizes to be given away.
