Tapp Named Oakley Goaltender Of The Week
December 17, 2007 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
Corpus Christi netminder Jason Tapp has been named the Central Hockey League's Oakley Goaltender of the Week, the CHL announced on Monday. Tapp played three games over the weekend going 2-1 and turned aside 121 of 128 shots he faced. Tapp began the week by setting a new CHL season-high and matching an all-time Rayz franchise high with a 58 save performance against Arizona on Thursday Night. Tapp is 8-11-2 on the year with a 3.15 GAA and .909 save percentage. He and the Rayz are currently in New Mexico preparing for their Tuesday morning game with the Scorpions. The Rayz will return to the American Bank Center on Saturday, December 22nd when they host the Amarillo Gorillas in a Christmas Celebration Game. Tickets are on sale now. Please call 814-PUCK for more information, or visit the Rayz online at www.ccrayz.com Tapp's 58 saves on 60 shots on Thursday vs. Arizona earned him a place in Rayz history. Tapp matched Eddy Skazyk's record for most saves ever in a Rayz game. Tapp stopped the first 55 shots against before the Sundogs found the back of the net. The 58 saves were the most by any CHL goaltender since Tulsa's Marco Emond turned aside 60 in a 5-4 win over the Memphis RiverKings on March 25, 2006. Emond currently plays for the Colorado Eagles. After a loss vs. Laredo on Friday, Tapp rebounded with another brilliant effort in Austin on Saturday. He repeatedly stoned Austin in a 2-1 Rayz victory, stopping 35 of 36 shots against. In both wins over the weekend, Tapp kept the opposition scoreless until deep in the third period.
Tapp, 29, is in his first season in Corpus Christi and has helped the Rayz turn their season around over the last few weeks. Tapp and the Rayz are 6-2-1 in his last nine starts and have climbed within two points of Rio Grande Valley for second place in the Southeast Division. Tapp has played in 14 straight games - dating back to Nov. 10th - and has started ten in a row. Tapp leads the league in games played (21), minutes (1236:25) and saves (653). He's the only goaltender in the league to log either more than 1,040 minutes or 600 saves. He's played 142 minutes more and made 125 more saves than second place David Cacciola. Tapp has the lowest GAA and highest save percentage of any goaltender that has more than 420 saves this season (six goalies).
This is the second weekly award earned by the Rayz in the last three weeks. Two weeks ago, rookie forward Brent Howarth was named the Oakley Player of the Week. That same week Tapp was a runner up for Goaltender of the Week honors.
The Rayz are proud to be celebrating a decade of hockey in South Texas. Individual game tickets are currently available.
