Youngstown SteelHounds News Release

Take Two From Texas

Youngstown was able to take two-of-three from a very game Texas Brahmas squad last week at the Chevrolet Centre. Wednesday night the Hounds come back from a 2-0 third period deficit to force overtime. Joel Irving scored with 58 seconds left in the extra period to propel Youngstown to a 4-3 victory. Friday night was flip and reverse it night as it was the Brahmas who came back from a third period deficit to defeat the SteelHounds by a score of 4-3. Saturday night Petr Pohl scored two goals and added an assist to lead Youngstown to a 5-2 victory. The Hounds are 17-6-1 (35 points) and in first place in the Northeast Division.

What's On Tap: Quick Roadie Before the Holidays

The Hounds are hitting the road one more time before the holidays as they visit the Tulsa Oilers on Friday night for an 8:35 start. The Hounds will finish the weekend in Louisiana when they play the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Saturday night at 8:05. Youngstown is 14-4-1 on the road and will have only 11 games away from the Chevrolet Centre after January 1st. All SteelHounds games are available on SteelHounds.com and ESPN Radio 1240.

Back to His Old Form

When Head Coach Kevin Kaminski acquired forward Jason Baird on November 16th he was hoping to see the player who had been to two CHL All Star Games. It appears that Baird has returned to that old form with six goals, seven assists and 39 penalty minutes in 11 games. The 27 year old from Cayuga Ontario is on an eight game point streak with 11 of his 13 points coming after November 30th. Baird came to Youngstown from the Corpus Christi Rayz where in 10 games he had one goal, three assists and 41 penalty minutes. The seven year pro was an all star in 2004 with the Indianapolis Ice and in 2005 with Corpus Christi.

Rotating Wall:

The Hounds continue to be without goaltender Andy Franck. The Hounds net-minder was called up to the American Hockey League's Providence Bruins on November 28th. In Franck's absence the SteelHounds have relied on Layne Sedevie and Brad Roberts to be the wall between the pipes. Youngstown is 4-4-0 since November 28th and played only one game outside the Northeast Division. Last week Sedevie started Wednesday and Friday night's games against Texas posting a 1-1-0 record. Saturday night Brad Roberts made 17 saves on 19 shots to lead the Hounds to a 5-2 win over the Brahmas. Both goaltenders are 3-2-0 on the season.

The "Prze-i-dent" Climbed the "Pohl" to Grab the "Jar":

Arguably the biggest reason for the Hounds 17-6-1 record is the young line of Eric Przepiorka, Petr Pohl and Kevin Jarman putting points on the board. The three of them have combined for 73 points coming from 32 goals and 41 assists. Center Eric Przepiorka is the oldest at 26 while 21 year old Petr Pohl leads the way in experience with 88 games played. Kevin Jarman, 22, is in his first season out UMass-Amherst. Przepiorka scored two goals on Friday night to give him a team best 13 on the season. Petr Pohl was the fifth round selection (#133 overall) for Columbus in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft and was called up to Syracuse of the American Hockey League in November. In 20 games for Youngstown he has 11 goals and 17 assists. He has a team leading three shorthanded goals and is atop the Central Hockey League's Three Star Leader board. Rookie Kevin Jarman was assigned to Youngstown on October 19th after being drafted in the fourth round (#103 overall) by Columbus in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft. In 21 games for the Hounds he has eight goals and eight assists to go with 53 penalty minutes. The trio has notched seven goals and nine assists in Youngstown's last five games.
