Tanner Gordon Fires Complete Game Shutout, Strikes Out Eight in 3-0 Yard Goats' Victory

August 17, 2023 - Eastern League (EL)
Hartford Yard Goats News Release

Hartford, CT- Tanner Gordon fired a seven inning complete game shutout as the Yard Goats defeated the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in game one of a doubleheader 3-0 on Thursday evening at Dunkin' Park. Julio Carreras had an RBI double, and Warming Bernabel added a two-run double helping Hartford to its ninth win in 11 games. The Fisher Cats won the nightcap 12-1.

Both teams had scoring opportunities early in the ballgame, but some impressive pitching and defense kept the game scoreless through three innings. In the first inning, Bladimir Restituyo reached second base on a throwing error to lead off the frame, but Hartford was unable to drive him home.

Then in the second inning, a leadoff walk for New Hampshire was squandered by the Fisher Cats, and Kyle Datres was stranded on third base after singling, stealing second base, and advancing to third on a throwing error. Gaining momentum in the third frame, the Fisher Cats wasted back-to-back one-out singles, as Gordon retired the next two New Hampshire foes.

However, in the fourth inning, the Yard Goats found themselves on the scoreboard thanks to some two-out magic. New Hampshire starter Ricky Tiedemann retired the first two batters of the inning before Datres singled and Grant Lavigne drew a walk. Next up to the dish was Julio Carreras, and he lined a double down the left field line to plate Datres and put runners on second and third base. Warming Bernabel then followed Bernabel's lead, as he smashed a double into the left field corner to bring home Lavigne and Carreras and give Hartford a 3-0 lead after four frames.

From there, Gordon continued to shine on the mound, allowing just one hit and one walk in the next three innings while striking out the side in the seventh inning to end the game.

In Game 2, Yanquiel Fernandez hit a 385-foot moonshot, leaving the bat at 104 miles per hour and soaring high over the tall wall in right field, but the Yard Goats fell to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 12-1. Alec Barger performed nicely out of the bullpen, working one-and-one-third innings and striking out three New Hampshire foes, and Blake Goldsberry followed suit, throwing two scoreless innings and striking out three batters. Drew Romo had a multi-hit game, singling up the middle in the second inning before dropping a well-placed bunt down the third base line for an infield single in the fifth inning. He also worked a walk in the seventh frame.

The Yard Goats and New Hampshire Fisher Cats will play the fifth game of a seven-game series on Friday night at Dunkin' Park. Andrew Quezada makes his 16th start for Hartford, while Abdiel Mendoza grabs the ball for New Hampshire. Friday's games will be broadcast on AM 1410, FM 100.9 and on the iheart radio app.
