LAST NIGHT: In a game that began on August 12th at LECOM Park, the Tampa Tarpons played as the away team and clobbered the Bradenton Marauders, 19-2, on Friday night...Tampa set season-highs in runs (19), hits (22), home runs (5) and extra-base hits (8)...Estevan Florial (4-for-7, 3B, 2B, RBI, 3R) and Ben Ruta (4-for-6, 2B, 3R) paced the offense with four hits apiece while Steven Sensley (3-for-6, HR, 5RBI, 2R) and Angel Aguilar (2-for-5, 2HR, Sac-F, 5RBI, 2R) led the way with 5 RBI each...Dom Thompson-Williams (2-for-4, HR, Sac-F, BB, 3RBI, 2R) Isiah Gilliam (3-for-5, BB, RBI, 3R) and Chace Numata (3-for-5, HR, 2B, BB, 2RBI, 2R) also had multi-hit games...RHP Rony Garcia (W, 1-5) logged a quality start, tying a season-high with 7.0IP (6H, 2ER, 0BB, 8K, HR, HB, 90P/59S)...LHP Anderson Severino closed the game with a scoreless 2.0IP (2H, 1BB, 3K)...Clint Frazier (1-for-2, BB, Sac-F, 2RBI, R) played five innings in left field in his second rehab game with Tampa.
RED THUNDER RETURNS: On Thursday, OF Clint Frazier joined the Tarpons on a Major League Rehabilitation Assignment for the second time this season. The 23-year-old had been sidelined since July 19th with concussion symptoms. Frazier also played four games with Tampa between April 26-29, batting .200 (3-for-15, 3R, HR, RBI, 2SB) in his first rehab assignment. The Georgia native has played 15 games with New York this season, batting.265 (9-for-34, 9R, 3 doubles, 1RBI, 5BB), but has spent most of his season with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .311 (59-for-190, 38R, 14 doubles, 3 triples, 10HR, 21RBI, 23BB, 4SB) in 48 games.
FINISH STRONG: The Tarpons have won 11 of their last 13 games and are back over the .500 mark for the first time since August 2nd (55-54). Despite the hot stretch, Tampa has been eliminated from postseason contention and will not play in the playoffs after doing so in 2016 and 2017.
RBI MACHINE: Dom Thompson-WIlliams extended his hitting streak to eight-straight games on Thursday. In that span, the 23-year-old is batting .344 (11-for-32) with 4HR and 13RBI. Since joining the Tarpons on May 21st, Thompson-Williams leads the Florida State League with 64RBI. The University of South Carolina product is batting .333 (34-for-102) with 21R, 4 doubles, 3 triples, 9HR, 30RBI and 14BB in August (27 games).
RUTA'S RAKING: Over his last 39 games, Ben Ruta is batting .358 (54-for-151) with 24RBI and 20 runs scored. The 24-year-old also leads all Yankees minor-leaguers with 37 stolen bases.
VS. BRADENTON: Tonight will be the 14th of 16 games scheduled (one cancelled) between the Tampa Tarpons and Bradenton Marauders. Tampa currently leads the season-series, 11-2, including 5-2 in those games played at GMS Field. In 10 games against the Marauders, Diego Castillo is batting .429 (15-for-35) with 9R, 3 doubles, 10RBI, 6BB and 2SB. Ben Ruta is batting .500 (19-for-38) with 12R, 2 doubles, 1 triple, 4HR, 12RBI, 2BB and 4SB in nine games against Bradenton.
STRIKEOUT RECORD BROKEN...AGAIN: For the second-straight season, Tampa has broken the single-season Florida State League record for most strikeouts by a pitching staff. In 2017, the Tampa Yankees set the mark at 1,215 strikeouts. Entering today, the Tarpons have totaled 1,244 strikeouts. Tampa is averaging 9.21 K-per-game and is on pace for 1,262K.
STRIKEOUTS FOR A CAUSE: The Tarpons have partnered with the American Cancer Society. Throughout the month of August, each time a strikeout is recorded by a Tampa pitcher, money will be raised for cancer research. The Tarpons are asking fans to donate $1.00 for every time a Tampa pitcher strikes out an opposing batter in the 31 games scheduled for August. BABY BOMBERS: The Tarpons lead the league with 109 home runs, surpassing the mark accomplished by Tampa in 2017 (103).
FOR STARTERS: LHP Reiver SanmartÃn (1-0, 0.00) will make his first start and his second appearance with Tampa. Last time out, pitched in relief and earned the win in his Tarpons debut at Daytona on 8/26 (6.0IP, 5H, 1R/0ER, 0BB, 5K, 84P/54S)... Began his season by making a spot-start for Double-A Trenton on 6/2 at Bowie (L, 5.0IP, 4H, 2R/1ER, 0BB, 4K)...Recorded 1SV and tallied 13K in two scoreless relief appearances (7.1IP, 5H, 0BB) for short-season, Single-A Staten Island on 6/20 and 6/26...has spent most of the season with Single-A Charleston, going 2-6 with a 4.19 ERA (43.0IP, 48H, 26R/20ER, 4BB, 31K, 2HR, 9HB) in eight starts
2017: Combined to go 7-2 with a 2.45 ERA (66.0IP, 74H, 23R/18ER, 9BB, 56K, 3HR) in 14 gamse (11 starts) between short-season Single-A Spokane and Single-A Hickory...yielded more than 1ER in just 4-of-11 starts.
