Tacoma Defiance Defeats San Diego 2-1 for First Road Victory of the Season

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. - Tacoma Defiance (6-4-6, 24 points) defeated San Diego Loyal SC (7-8-3, 24 points) Saturday evening 2-1 at Torero Stadium in San Diego. For Tacoma, it was its first win on the road this season, with an 0-4-3 record away from Cheney Stadium prior to this match.

San Diego scored the lone goal of the first half in the 21st minute when a scuffle inside the 18-yard-box eventually found the foot of Corey Hertzog who only had to tap it in to put the home side up a goal.

The game completely changed in the second half when Defiance was able to score two goals in six minutes to take and hold onto the lead. The first came in the 65th minute when Alex Villanueva put the final touch on a low cross that came across the face of goal courtesy of Ray Serrano. Then, in the 71st minute, Carlos Anguiano was able to lob in a rebound into the back corner of the net to put Tacoma up for good. Anguiano has scored three times this season, once in each game against San Diego.

The win was good enough to put Tacoma in third place in the Pacific Division standings, level on points San Diego, but holding a +4 goal differential in head-to-head matches. Defiance also has two games in hand on its Southern Californian rival.

Looking to extend its win streak to three games, Wade Webber's side turns its attention to Orange County FC, with the match slated for August 18 (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN+).
