New Mexico United News Release
Albuquerque, NM - New Mexico United and El Paso Locomotive played to a 1-1 draw in Albuquerque Saturday night, with Locomotive FC scoring a 97th minute equalizer as the final action of the match.
United controlled the majority of possession for much of the first half and Amando Moreno broke through for his third goal of the season - and first since returning from the El Salvador National Team - in the 33rd minute. Sergio Rivas found Moreno on a low through ball in the middle of the pitch. Moreno broke between two defenders and slotted home for the first half lead.
The match got chippy midway through the second half, as El Paso's Diego Luna was sent off for throwing an elbow (77'), and four other players (Devon Sandoval, Andrew Tinari, Daniel Bruce and Leandro Carrijo) saw yellow cards within a four-minute period. Despite being down to ten men for the final twenty minutes, El Paso continued to press high. Locomotive FC hit the post twice in the 72nd and 90th minutes, and key clearances from Justin Schmidt and Austin Yearwood kept United on top until the final play of the match.
In the 97th minute, Richie Ryan sent in a corner that bounced around the box before finding the foot of Matt Bahner who slotted past Alex Tambakis to provide the final 1-1 tally. It was the second time this season that El Paso has forced a tie against United on the final play.
United celebrated Meow Wolf Night tonight, and welcomed 10,418 fans to Rio Grande Credit Union Field at Isotopes Park - United's highest-attended match of the season.
