TAMPA, Fla. - A day after scoring a season-high 12 runs, the Tampa Yankees (10-14) were held in check by the Daytona Tortugas (13-11) in a 4-0 loss on Sunday afternoon at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Tampa won the series, 2-1.
The Yankees finished 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position, resulting in their fourth shutout loss of the season.
Taylor Widener made the start for Tampa and struck out five of the first six batters he faced before making his only mistake in the third frame.
Narciso Crook singled off the glove of Nick Solak at second base and advanced on a walk by Garrett Boulware. Following a sacrifice bunt by Mitch Piotnik, Widener struck out Daniel Sweet for the second out. The mistake pitch occurred to the next batter, when Shed Long crushed a three run home run over the right field wall.
In the first five innings combined, Tampa stranded seven runners in scoring position, including a leadoff double in the second and the bases loaded in the third.
Daytona added its final run with the help of a pair of errors in the fifth. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Piotik stole second and advanced on a throwing error by catcher Sharif Othman . Later in the inning, Othman tried to pick Piotnik off of third and threw the ball into left field, allowing the runner to score.
Widener (L, 0-3) allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits in five innings, walking two while tying his career-high with seven strikeouts. The righty threw 45 of 72 pitches for strikes.
RHP Zack Littell entered in relief in the sixth and surrendered a leadoff double before retiring the next nine batters he faced, logging three scoreless frames and recording one strikeout.
Wendolyn Bautista (W, 1-0) earned his first win of the season after making a quality start for Daytona. The right-hander scattered six hits, two walks and a hit-batter over six shutout innings, striking out six and throwing 52 of 77 pitches for strikes.
RHPs Jake Paulson (2.0IP, 0H) and Tanner Rainey (1.0IP, 0H) combined to retire the final nine Tampa batters in order.
Solak (2-for-4) logged his fifth multi-hit game and has reached base safely in 10 consecutive games. Jeff Hendrix (1-for-2, 2BB) reached base three times.
Up next, the Yankees travel to Dunedin to begin a four-game series with the Blue Jays on Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium. RHP Albert Abreu (0-0, 1.29 ERA) is scheduled to make his second start since joining Tampa. The Blue Jay starter is TBD.
