Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY – The Kansas City T-Bones climbed out of the Northern League's South Division cellar Friday night, defeating the Gary SouthShore RailCats 6-5 in the completion of Thursday's suspended game before taking the regularly scheduled game 5-2, in front of 5,617 fans at U. S. Steel Yard.

The T-Bones took advantage of 12 walks issued by RailCats pitchers in the two games. Seven of the batters who walked eventually scored.

Kansas City eked out a one-run victory in the first game, blowing 4-0 and 5-2 leads before scoring the decisive run in the ninth inning. In the ninth, against RailCats reliever Benji Miller (1-1), Rick Prieto drew a one-out walk, Eddie Pearson singled, sending Prieto to third, and Ray Brown hit a sacrifice fly to plate Prieto.

The RailCats, who trailed 4-0 after three and one-half innings when Thursday's game was suspended by rain, rallied behind the hitting of Rich Rodrigues and Mike Brown. Rodrigues had three hits, including an RBI-double, and Brown batted 2-for-5, including a two-run game-tying homer in the seventh inning.

The regularly scheduled game was a pitchers' duel between RailCats righthander Brian Houdek and T-Bones righty Jon McDonald. Houdek held the T-Bones hitless over the first four and two-thirds innings, while McDonald limited the RailCats to three singles and induced two double play grounders in the first five innings.

Houdek issued a pair of walks in the sixth inning, fueling a three-run Kansas City rally. Pearson (single), Ray Brown (double), and Matt Ceriani (single) each drove in a run with an RBI-base hit.

The RailCats drew back to within a run in the sixth inning when Mike Stoner hit a two-out, two-run homer to left field. But the T-Bones clinched the game with two runs in the seventh, after a leadoff walk by RailCats reliever Chris Andel set the table for RBI-hits by Prieto (double) and Pearson (single).

T-Bones closer D. J. Johnson picked up saves in both games, working 1-2-3 final innings in each contest.

The RailCats (6-15), who have dropped 11 consecutive games, fell one-half game behind the T-Bones (7-15), who moved into fourth place in the division with the victories.

The RailCats host Kansas City again Saturday night at U. S. Steel Yard, in the third of a four-game series, part of a six-game homestand for the RailCats. Saturday is Rusty the RailCat Bobblehead Doll Giveaway Night. Each of the first 1,000 kids (age 13 & under) will receive a Rusty the RailCat bobblehead doll, courtesy of Bennigan's and Indiana 105. There will also be a live performance from the band Misbehavin' immediately following the game.
