Wichita Wingnuts News Release
KANSAS CITY, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 9-8 to the Kansas City T-Bones at Community America Ballpark on Friday night.
Keanon Simon, who finished the night with four hits, drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth to break an 8-8 tie. With runners on first and second and two outs, Simon singled to left field in front of Tommy Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald made a strong throw to the plate which appeared to be on target to record the final out, but the ball took a bad bounce over the head of Wingnuts' catcher Edwin Bellorin and allowed the winning run to score.
The Wingnuts rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to give themselves a chance to win. With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the sixth, T-Bones' starter Devin Anderson hit Juan Richardson with a pitch to force in the Wingnuts' first run of the night. Jorge Delgado followed with a line drive, two-run single to left that cut the T-Bones' lead to 5-3. After Josh Workman walked to load the bases, Anderson was replaced by Drew Graham who allowed a sacrifice fly to Peter Barrows that pulled the Wingnuts within one.
Kansas City responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half. Ray Sadler, Jim Fasano, and Kala Ka'aihue each drove in a run to stretch the lead to 8-4.
Wichita rallied again in the top of the seventh, again loading the bases with no outs. Facing new reliever Steven Stewart, Brent Clevlen grounded a double down the left field line that sliced the lead to 8-6. Richardson made it 8-7 with an RBI groundout to second.
The Wingnuts finally tied the game in the top of the eighth when Bellorin led off with a single. Bellorin took second on a sacrifice from Fitzgerald and moved to third on a wild pitch. Tyler Robbins hit a sacrifice fly to left field that knotted the game at 8-8.
Nick Singleton started for the Wingnuts and took a no-decision, allowing five earned runs in three-plus innings. Singleton walked six and struck out three.
Anderson also took a no-decision, allowing four earned runs on six hits in five-plus innings. Anderson walked three and struck out five.
Kendy Batista took the loss for the Wingnuts, allowing one earned run in one and two-thirds. Kyle Dahman earned the win in relief for Kansas City, pitching one and one-third scoreless innings.
Wichita left the go-ahead run in scoring position in each of the final three innings. Horn extended his hitting streak to 14 games in a row, while Clevlen has now hit safely in 11 straight. Wingnuts' closer Josh Dew took over for Josh Workman as DH in the top of the seventh. Workman was ejected for arguing a called third strike. Dew singled in the top of the ninth and stole second base. Jared Simon did not allow a run in two innings of work.
The series concludes Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. Junior Guerra faces former Wingnuts' left-hander Trent Lare. All the action can be heard locally on Oldies 93.5 KWME and worldwide at www.kleyam.com
