July 19, 2006 - Frontier League (FL)
Traverse City Beach Bums News Release
The Windy City ThunderBolts scored three runs on four hits in the third inning to push the T-Bolts to a 3-2 victory over the Traverse City Beach Bums.
Tony Casoli struggled early on allowing a pair of walks and a pair of hits in the first inning, but the right-hander was able to work his way out of the bases loaded jam with the help of a double play and a strikeout of Mike Forbes to end the inning.
The Beach Bums took an early lead in the first inning. With one out, Steve Young beat out an infield single and moved to second on an error. A Brad Vericker ground out moved Young to third where a Nick Batkoski RBI single pushed the Beach Bums second baseman across the plate for a 1-0 Traverse City lead.
TC went up 2-0 in the second when Mike Reese hit the first pitch of the inning over the left-field fence for his fourth homerun of the season.
Windy City scored all the runs they needed in the third inning when RBI singles by John Santor and John McCarthy and an RBI groundout by Mike Forbes made it 3-2 T-Bolts.
The pitchers took over after that. Tony Casoli (8-2) allowed just two hits after the third inning, finishing the game going eight innings, giving up nine hits and three runs, walking two and striking out six.
Windy City's starter, Toro Trevino (2-1) was even to the task. The right-hander went 7.2 innings allowing six hits and two run, one of them earned. He walked one and struck out five. Brian Beuning pitched the final 1.1 innings for his league leading 15th save.
The Beach Bums best opportunity came in the eighth. Steve Young lined a single past a diving John Santor into left field. The T-Bolts then brought in left-handed specialist Rick Weber. The southpaw was unable to get his job done as he walked Brad Vericker to put the tying run on second base. Nick Batkoski came in to face WC closer Brian Beuning. Batkoski drove a sharp liner into right that gave Mike Forbes trouble before he was able to make the catch.
