T-Birds Rally Late, But Fall to Legends

Frisco, TX - Despite a big fourth quarter run, the New Mexico Thunderbirds (13-15) finished up their five-game road trip with a loss to the hot shooting Texas Legends (14-13) on Sunday afternoon by a score of 111-102.

The Legends shot 52.2% in the game and had five players score in double figures. The Thunderbirds' Marcus Hubbard led all scorers with a season-high 22 points and also grabbed 13 rebounds.

In the first quarter, with the Thunderbirds holding a 17-16 lead, Texas went on a 13-3 run to take a nine point lead. Dominique Johnson scored nine points in the first quarter for the Legends and they led 31-24 after one quarter.

The Legends extended their lead to as many as 10 points with 2:02 remaining in the second quarter and would lead 62-56 at the half. Texas shot over 55% in the first half, led by Johnson who scored 13 points on 6-for-8 shooting and Matt Rogers who added 11 on 5-for-6 shooting.

In the third quarter, with the Legends still leading by six points, they went on a 12-0 run to take an 82-64 lead. Texas would hold an 11 point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Thunderbirds trailed 97-84 with 7:30 to go in the game, but then went on a 16-5 run to cut the lead to just two points, the closest they had been since the first quarter. Justin Dentmon answered by hitting a 3-pointer that started a 9-0 run that helped Texas take control for good.

Antonio Daniels scored 9 points for the Legends and dished out 16 assists.

The Thunderbirds will return home on Feb. 1 for the Night of Thunder, in which Rio Rancho High School and Cleveland High School will square off prior to the Thunderbirds game against the Texas Legends. The next night on Feb. 2 is Hoops that Heal night where a portion of the tickets will go to the Susan G. Komen fund.
