T-Birds Fall to Defending D-League Champions

Hidalgo, TX - Despite coming back from down 17 points in the third quarter, the New Mexico Thunderbirds (4-2) fell to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (3-3) 95-88 on Tuesday morning.

In the first quarter, Shane Edwards got off to a hot start and scored on each of the Thunderbirds first three possessions, he would finish the quarter with a game high 12 points. The Vipers, however, took the early lead keyed by a 6-0 run midway through the first quarter to take a 17-10 lead. The T-Birds closed the first quarter on a 14-3 run and led 24-20 after one quarter of play.

The Vipers opened the second quarter on a 15-7 run to a take a four-point lead with 7:37 remaining in the half. They went on to outscore the T-Birds 31-13 in the second and took a 14-point half time lead. The Thunderbirds were held to a season low 37 points at the break.

In the third quarter, the Vipers extended their lead to 17 points with 6:39 remaining on a Mouhammad Faye three pointer. The T-Birds answered with a 19-4 run to end the quarter and trailed just 66-64 heading in the final quarter.

An Edwards lay-up with 8:17 remaining in the game gave the Thunderbirds their first lead since the 8:32 mark in the second quarter. After some back and forth action the Thunderbirds went on a 6-0 run to take an 80-75 lead. The Vipers answered and a Garrett Temple three-pointer with 1:25 remaining gave the Vipers the lead for good.

Edwards led all scorers with 20 points, while Jason Horton chipped in with seven points and 11 assists.

The Thunderbirds and Vipers will go at it again tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. MT from the State Farm Arena.
