T-Birds Fall in Giddens First Game

Erie, PA - Despite the debut of J.R. Giddens, who scored 12 points and had seven rebounds, the New Mexico Thunderbirds (14-19) lost to the Erie Bayhawks (21-9), 125-100 on Thursday night.

Giddens wasted no time getting involved in Thunderbirds offense, he scored the first four points of the game for the T-Birds and finished the first quarter with eight points on 4-for-4 shooting. Despite Giddens scoring, the T-Birds trailed 33-26 after one quarter.

In the second quarter, with the Bayhawks leading 41-34, they went on a 20-6 run to take a 21 point lead. The T-Birds would close the half on a 7-2 run, but still trailed 63-47 at the break. Ivan Johnson led all scorers with 22 first half points for Erie.

The Bayhawks used a 20-6 run in the third quarter to take a 28-point third quarter lead. They would hold a 91-69 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Giddens ended up playing a team high 44 minutes in his T-Birds debut.

The Bayhawks shot 58.1%, led by Johnson who finished the game with 37 points.

The Thunderbirds will play the second of three games against the Erie Bayhawks on Saturday at 5 p.m. The T-Birds will return home for March Giveaway Madness beginning on March 2 for Defined Fitness Night with a T-Bird Magnet giveaway.
