T-Birds Drop Second Straight to Utah

Orem, UT - The Utah Flash (23-15) used a big third quarter run to top the New Mexico Thunderbirds (15-25) 106-88 on Saturday night.

In the first quarter, the Flash jumped out to a 13-5 lead led by Ryan Thompson who had a couple of early 3-pointers. The T-Birds would answer with an 8-0 to tie up the game at 13 and ended up trailing by just two points, 25-23 at the end of one quarter.

After a back and forth start to the second quarter, the Flash used a 9-0 run to equal their largest lead of the game at 53-45. Brandon Costner led the Flash with 15 points at the half and Utah led by that eight point margin, 59-51. Walter Sharpe led the T-Birds with 15 points of his own at the break.

With 7:53 to go in the third quarter, Shane Edwards hit a turnaround jumper to cut the lead down to seven points. Utah would then take control of the game with a 19-1 run to take an 85-60 lead. They would hold a 20 point advantage after three quarters and go on to win by 18.

Utah had seven players score in double figures led by Costner who had 21 points.

The T-Birds will return home to continue March Giveaway Madness on Friday, March 11th at Susan G. Komen for the Cure Night, sponsored by Presbyterian Hospital. The first 500 fans in the doors will receive a free Thundercat sticker. Presbyterian Hospital will be presenting a $1000 check to the Susan G. Komen fund. There will also be a silent auction for autographed pink basketballs with 100% of the proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen fund.

On Saturday, March 12th, the Thunderbirds will be hosting Hispanic Heritage Night, presented by Univision and Premier Distributing Company. The T-Birds will be donating a portion of every ticket purchased to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The night will include a postgame concert featuring the National Institute of Flamenco, Kymberlee Ann Lopez and local sister singing act, SORELA. All fans will also have the opportunity to win Lakers tickets, a Taos Ski Valley Vacation, an Angel Fire Deluxe Ski Vacation and a VIP Package to the Ty Murray Invitational.
