Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, finished their four-game series with the Buffalo Bisons with a 6-2 loss Wednesday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Buffalo and Syracuse split the four-game set.
The Bisons used a two-run first inning to get out to an early lead. Luis Hernandez swatted a double that rolled all the way to the centerfield wall for Buffalo's first hit of the night. First baseman Mike Jacobs crushed a two-out homer to right later in the inning to give the Bisons a 2-0 advantage.
Jacobs went deep again in the fourth, extending the Bisons lead to three. The home run was Jacobs' second of the night and his fourth of the series. Jacobs now has 13 home runs for the season, second-most on the team.
In the seventh, Buffalo leftfielder Lucas Duda launched a solo homer over the out-of-town scoreboard in deep right centerfield to add to the Bisons lead. Duda has hit .384 with seven long balls and 17 RBI in his last 10 games.
The Chiefs scored twice in the eighth to cut the gap to three runs. Chris Duncan sent a two-out single into centerfield to begin the rally. Pedro Lopez reached on an infield single and moved to second on third baseman Mike Cervenak's throwing error, putting runners on second and third for pinch-hitter Leonard Davis. Bisons shortstop Luis Hernandez bobbled Davis's grounder to the left side and overthrew Jacobs at first. Duncan and Lopez crossed home plate on the play for Syracuse's only runs of the night. Three of Buffalo's four fielding errors came in the eighth.
The Bisons added an insurance run in the ninth on Justin Turner's solo shot to right. Turner's homer was Buffalo's fourth of the game and their ninth of the series.
Jason Jones pitched seven innings and took the loss for the Chiefs. The righthander allowed eight hits and four runs. He walked one and struck out three.
All-Star starting pitcher Pat Misch threw all nine innings for the Bisons and picked up his ninth win. Misch allowed two unearned runs and five hits during the 98-pitch outing. The lefthander retired sixteen Syracuse batters in a row between the first and seventh innings. It was Misch's second complete game of the season and the tenth of his career.
The Chiefs begin a two game set with the Lehigh Valley IronPigs Thursday night at Alliance Bank Stadium. Syracuse righthander Shairon Martis (5-5, 4.04) and Lehigh Valley righty Ty Taubenheim (0-1, 4.00) are Thursday night's probable starters. First pitch will be at 7:00.
