Bulls Rally To Beat Charlotte 6-4

(Fort Mill, SC)Elliot Johnson scored the lead run in the sixth inning, and the Bulls went on to edge Charlotte 6-4 on Wednesday and split a two-game series.

Johnson, in his second start after missing three weeks with a quad injury, singled with one out against Jhonny Nunez (1-1), and went to second on left fielder Alejandro De Aza's throwing error. Johnson then scored on a two-base throwing error by Fernando Cortez on a hard hit ground ball to third by Desmond Jennings.

Durham then tacked on a run in the seventh when Jose Lobaton singled to right, scoring Justin Ruggiano, who had walked.

The Bulls had built a 4-0 lead in the third when Ruggiano hit a three-run homer, his eighth, and Dan Johnson followed with his league-leading 23rd homer.

Charlotte answered with four runs in the fifth. The Durham bullpen didn't allow a runner past first after the fifth inning. Dale Thayer (1-1) got the win and Winston Abreu pitched the ninth for his 10th save. Durham collected eight hits and drew nine walks. JJ Furmaniak had two hits and two walks to lead the attack.

Durham (52-34) leads Charlotte by 10 games in the South Division with four games against Norfolk before the All-Star break. Richard De Los Santos starts on Thursday in Durham at 7:05. Coverage on 620 the Buzz begins at 6:50.
