Syracuse Crunch News Release

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Crunch (6-4-3-0) edged new division foe the Albany Devils (6-3-1-3) 3-2, in a shootout tonight at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Yanni Gourde and Tanner Richard scored in the shootout while Crunch netminder Kristers Gudlevsksis stopped two of three Devils' shooters to secure victory in the Crunch's first shootout of the season.

The Crunch and Devils traded goals in the opening frame to head into the locker room knotted at one after the first period. The two clubs combined for eight shots on goal in the period, with the Crunch holding a 5-3 edge. Devils' Scott Timmons opened the scoring 1:06 into the first period by trailing behind a Paul Thompson breakaway. Syracuse responded with Gourde's third goal of the season, an unassisted tally 4:49 into the first. Gourde capitalized on an Albany miscue and slid the puck past Albany netminder Scott Wedgewood from the right post.

Syracuse's Joel Vermin scored the lone goal of the second period to put the Crunch up 2-1. Vermin chipped the rebound of a Jake Dotchin shot past Wedgewood 2:52 into the frame. Jonathan Marchessault extended his point streak to five games with the secondary assist.

Devils center Tim Sestito tied the game 2:44 into the third period. Sestito capitalized on the rebound of a Reece Scarlett shot to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.

Neither team could score in the extra session despite Albany having one power-play opportunity due to a Nikita Nesterov holding penalty. Both teams were scoreless on the power play tonight, Syracuse failing to score on seven chances and the Devils on four.

Syracuse returns to the War Memorial to host the Hershey Bears at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14.
