Walla Walla Sweets News Release
MEDFORD, OR - The Walla Walla Sweets rode solid pitching and heads-up base running to a game three victory, 6-4 over the Medford Rogues at Harry and David Field Monday night. Starting pitcher Joe Arlt took a no decision after giving up the game tying home run in the seventh as reliever Connor Lawhead got the win.
Arlt retired the first seven Rogues hitters he faced before giving up a one-out single to catcher Ryan Teel in the third inning. His effort helped keep the game scoreless until the fourth inning. Sweets shortstop John Skrbec led off with a double before being moved to third on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, and he scored when the ball was thrown into the home dugout on the play for a 1-0 lead.
Medford responded in the bottom of the fourth with left fielder Matt Taylor's lead-off double and designated hitter Kevin Davidson singled to tie the game 1-1. Davidson ended his night going 3-for-4 at the plate with 3 RBI and a run scored.
Walla Walla took a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning when seven men came to the plate. Skrbec walked with one out and advanced to third on catcher Dominic Miroglio's single, ending Rogues starter Mike Bradshaw's night. He struck out three in 5.1 innings pitched, giving up three earned runs. With reliever Connor Harris in, Sweets first baseman Matt Mendenhall contributed another RBI, driving in Skrbec for a 2-1 lead. It was the second straight night that Mendenhall had contributed the go-ahead RBI. With two outs, designated hitter Spencer O'Neil drove in two more Sweets runs with a double for a 4-1 score.
In the bottom of the sixth, Davidson struck again with his biggest blow, a two-run home run to left field. At 4-3 in the seventh, Teel also homered to tie the game, ending Arlt's night. Arlt finished 6.1 innings while striking out five hitters, and all of his strikeouts on the night were looking. Connor Lawhead pitched 1.1 innings of relief, and got his second win of the year after the Sweets scored once in the eighth and once in the ninth.
Miroglio reached in the eighth on an error at shortstop. After moving to third base, he took home on a ball that got away from the catcher Teel, just a few feet in front of the plate, taking advantage and scoring the go-ahead run to make it a 5-4 game.
In the ninth, third baseman Jarod Gonzales hit a lead off triple before coming home to score on a passed ball. In the bottom of the inning, closer Sean-Luke Brija walked a man but struck out the side for his league-leading fourth save of the season.
Rogues reliever Christian Morrison took the loss in 1.1 innings of work as the Rogues move to 4-8 in the West Coast League standings. The Sweets are at 5-4 as they kick off a home stand Tuesday to face the Wenatchee AppleSox for a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.
