Inland Empire 66ers News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Matt Sweeney blasted a long two-run homer in the eighth inning and the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes beat the Inland Empire 66ers, 2-0, at the Epicenter on Saturday night. The loss is the fifth in a row for the 66ers.
After a wild, high-scoring contest on Friday, the two teams engaged in a pitcher's duel tonight. Tim Sexton and Esmerlin Jimenez each worked six shutout innings to keep their teams in the game.
With the game still scoreless in the eighth, Andrew Romine led off with an infield single. Matt Sweeney then crushed a pitch from 66ers reliever Daigoro Rondon (0-1) well beyond the wall in right field for his third homer of the year and a game-deciding 2-0 lead.
The Sixers best chance to score came in the second inning, as Tommy Giles doubled to right before Preston Mattingly followed with a base hit to put runners on the corners with no outs. Jimenez then struck out Steve Caseras before receiving some help from catcher Alberto Rosario, who picked Giles off third base to quell the rally.
Sexton pitched well for the second time this week, limiting the Quakes to four hits and two walks in six shutout innings.
Jimenez was just as good, allowing five hits and walking one in six scoreless frames.
Sammy Leon (1-1) earned the win with two innings of relief before Ismael Carmona completed the shutout to earn his first save.
The series finale is Sunday at 2:05 p.m. when a pair of lefties will battle under the sun. Alberto Bastardo (0-1, 3.38) will be sent to the mound to end the streak while Trevor Reckling (1-1, 0.75) gets the ball for the Quakes. Inland Empire will return to Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Monday, April 20 to face the JetHawks at 7:05 PM. Monday is the first Kid's Eat Free Monday sponsored by San Bernardino County where fans will receive a voucher for a hot dog, soda and chips with the purchase of a child's ticket (12 and under).
