Inland Empire 66ers News Release
RANCHO CUCAMONGA, CA - Alberto Bastardo pitched seven masterful innings and Alex Garabedian hit his first home run as the Inland Empire 66ers ended a five-game losing streak with a 4-0 win over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Sunday afternoon.
Bastardo was unfazed by the 95-degree temperature at game time, retiring the first 13 batters he faced. After consecutive singles from Efren Navarro and Jeremy Moore in the fifth, Bastardo retired the final seven batters he faced, including four by way of the strikeout.
Garabedian handed his battery mate a 1-0 lead when he led off the third inning with a high home run over the foul pole in left field for his first big fly as a 66er. He also walked twice and scored another run.
Trevor Reckling (1-2), who beat the 66ers with six shutout innings on Opening Night, pitched well again for the Quakes and took a tough-luck loss, limiting Inland Empire to a single run on three hits in seven innings.
Bastardo (1-1) was even better, mixing speeds and using all three pitches effectively throughout the afternoon. He limited Rancho Cucamonga to two hits and no walks while striking out six and facing one batter over the minimum in seven innings. With two on and one out in the fifth, he picked Moore off first base to quiet the threat.
Leading 1-0 in the eighth, the Sixers added a pair of runs. Garabedian scored from third when Garett Green reached on a fielding error from Navarro. Next, Green came home when a high pop up from Tommy Giles fell between Matt Sweeney at third and Abel Nieves at shortstop for an infield hit.
After Greg Miller retired Navarro for the first out in the eighth, Justin Orenduff worked the final 1 2/3 innings to complete the shutout and earn his first save.
Eduardo Perez went 2-for-4 as the only 66er with a multi-hit effort.
Inland Empire returns to Arrowhead Credit Union Park on Monday to face the Lancaster JetHawks at 7:05 PM. Monday is the first Kid's Eat Free Monday sponsored by the County of San Bernardino, as fans will receive a voucher for a hot dog, soda and chips with the purchase of a child's ticket (12 and under).
