LAST TIME OUT

MOOSIC, PA (June 19, 2022) - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders defeated the Rochester Red Wings 5-4 on Sunday afternoon. Tim Locastro went 3-for-4 with three runs batted in and the game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the eighth.

Rochester got the scoring started early in the top of the first against RailRiders' starter Hayden Wesneski. Cole Freeman reached with a single and was eventually brought home on a sacrifice fly by MLB rehabber Alcides Escobar to give the Red Wings a 1-0 advantage. Wesneski gave up four runs (three earned) over five innings in his second outing of the series. The RailRiders struck for four in the bottom of the frame against Rochester starter Sterling Sharp. Oswald Peraza homered to left in his return to the lineup to put Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on the board. That was followed by four more consecutive hits, including run-scoring doubles from Derek Dietrich and Tim Locastro to make it 4-1. Sharp allowed those four runs over five innings of work with five strikeouts.

The Red Wings knotted things up with a three-spot in the third. Joey Meneses and Ildemaro Vargas had the RBI hits. The next four frames came and went without a tally before Tim Locastro broke the 4-4 tie with his second home run of the season in the eighth. Locastro went 3-for-4 with three RBI and fell a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Zach Greene, Shane Greene and David McKay combined to pitch four scoreless innings out of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen in the 5-4 final. McKay (3-0) earned his third win for the RailRiders. Patrick Murphy (2-1) suffered the loss for Rochester.

NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders are in Toldeo, Ohio for the first time since May 19, 2019. They split a four-game series with the Toledo Mud Hens in that series. This six-game series is the only time these two teams meet this season. This is also currently the furthest Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has traveled this season. Fifth Third Field is 479 miles away from PNC Field.

WHO DAT - The Mud Hens, Triple-A affiliate of the Detroit Tigers, are the first International League West team the RailRiders face this season. They find themselves in fourth place in the West division entering Tuesday. Toledo has won seven of its last ten games and are 4.5 GB of Nashville.

ON YOUR LEFT - The Mud Hens are slated to throw all right-handed starters in this series, which opens the door for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to utilize their now heavy left-handed hitting lineup. This season, the RailRiders are batting .233 against righties which is ten points higher than against left-handers. The RailRiders are 14-29 against righties and 13-10 against lefty starters this season.

BET ON THE SET - The RailRiders just tallied their first series win at PNC Field this season when they won four of six against Rochester last week. It was their first at home since they took five of six against the Red Wings September 7-12, 2021. The RailRiders have won just three series this year.

OUR FAVORITE CHRIS - The Yankees signed infielder Chris Owings to a Minor League contract and assigned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on June 18. He is set to make his RailRiders debut Tuesday. Owings was last with the Baltimore Orioles, playing in 27 games in the Majors this season. He has also been in the Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals systems. He was placed on unconditional release waivers on June 12 by the Orioles. Despite hitting .107 with Baltimore this year, Owings slashed .326/.420/.628 in 21 games with the Rockies in 2021.

MAKIN' MOVES - Today, the Yankees announced they have claimed former RailRider Albert Abreu off waivers from the Kansas City Royals. In a corresponding move, David McKay was designated for an assignment to clear space on the 40-man roster.

BIENVENIDO DE NUEVO - Oswald Peraza returned to the lineup on Sunday after missing four games due to a non-COVID illness. In his first at bat, Peraza launched his team-best seventh home run of the season. He went on to go two-for-four with a stolen base. He is in his first full season with the RailRiders (eight games in 2021) and is ranked as the number two prospect in the Yankees system by Baseball America.

SWIPER YES SWIPING - Estevan Florial stole three bases on Friday. It was the second time this season he had completed the feat. The last time he had done it was on May 6 where he stole three bases against Rochester at Frontier Field. The catcher behind the plate for both of those games was Tres Barerra. He went five-for-five in stolen bases in the series, currently leading the team with 22 this season. He is tied for third in the IL.

FLO-BP RIDA - Estevan Florial went hitless on Sunday, ending his eleven-game hitting streak (16-for-46, .348), the longest hitting streak for any RailRider this season. Prior to the stretch, Florial's longest hit streak in his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre career lasted nine games from June 24 to July 4, 2021 where he went 13-for-37 (.351). He tied the longest hitting streak of his career which occurred from July 30 to August 12, 2017 while with the Charleston RiverDogs (15-for-45, .333).

STREAKY - Oswald Peraza has a four-game hitting streak... Greg Bird has a three-game hitting streak... Zach Greene has made five-straight scoreless appearances... Greg Weissert has made four-straight scoreless outings...

ON DECK - The RailRiders return home on Tuesday, June 28 to face the Buffalo Bisons. It's "Twosday" at PNC Field. Get 2-for-1 lawn or bleacher seats online only and enjoy $2 Landshark Lager tallboys for two hours after gates open, presented by PrimoHoagies and The River.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (50-17) defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-2 last night. Gerrit Cole allowed one run on one hit and twelve strikeouts in 7.1 IP. It took the 2022 Yankees 67 games to reach 50 wins. The 2021 Yankees did it in 94 games. They face the Rays again tonight at 7:10 PM with Nestor Cortes on the mound... The Somerset Patriots (41-22) lost 5-1 to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on Sunday. The loss ended their six-game winning streak. Their only run scored on an error. The Patriots begin a series tonight at home against the Hartford Yard Goats at 7:05 PM with Luis Medina on the mound... A seven-run explosion in the 11th inning led the Hudson Valley Renegades (32-31) to a wild 16-10 victory over the Greensboro Grasshoppers on Sunday. The Renegades hit four home runs in the game, including two in the 11th. Blane Abeyta gets the ball tonight at 7:00 PM against the Winston-Salem Dash... The Tampa Tarpons (27-36) won the finale against the St. Lucie Mets 4-0. The Tarpons did not tally an extra-base hit in the game. They took a series split, three games apiece.
