Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: A five-run fourth fueled the visiting Red Wings to a 7-1 series-opening victory over the RailRiders at PNC Field.
THREE IS THE MAGIC NUMBER: SWB's magic number to secure a playoff spot sits at two. It would clinch post-season play at PNC Field by besting Rochester tonight. The magic number to win the division is five.
TIME TO MAKE THE DONUTS: The RailRiders' 23 shutout wins pace the minors and continue to redefine the single-season franchise record. The 2009 SWB Yankees previously held the franchise record with 16 blankings.
FTW!: The RailRiders' 83 wins make for SWB's highest total since the 2012 vagabond then-SWB Yankees took the IL North with 84. Even with a cancelled contest that lessened the RailRiders' 2016 schedule to 143 games, the team is on pace to win 89 games. No IL club has won 90+ games since the then-SWB Red Barons won a franchise-record 91 affairs in 2002. The RailRiders boast Triple-A's best record and stand tied with Double-A Reading for the most wins in baseball.
ALL IN: Elsewhere on the farm, both Low-A Charleston and Advanced-A Tampa have secured postseason berths in the South Atlantic League and Florida State League respectively. Double-A Trenton has a magic number of one to secure an Eastern League playoff spot and sits just 2.5 games back of first-place Reading for the division. The Thunder and R-Phils face each other over their final four regular-season games Sept. 2-5. Trenton would cement a playoff berth with a Hartford loss to Harrisburg or a Thunder victory at Portland. The Short Season-A Staten Island Yankees own the NY-Penn League's wild-card chase by 4.5 games with a magic number of seven.
SOL MAN: Donovan Solano has multiple hits in eight of his last 11 games played. He fell a triple shy of the cycle last night. He ranks among the IL's best in batting average (5th, .312) and hits (1st, 149). In 24 games played this month, he has slashed .402/.417/.576/.993 with 16 RBIs and 10 runs scored. His 62 RBIs on the season trail only Aaron Judge (65) for the team lead.
R&R: Rob Refsnyder got last night off. On Thursday, he went for 1-for-3 with his first Triple-A bruise of 2016. In 13 games played since his return from the bigs, he has gone 21-for-47 (.447) with six RBIs and five walks for a .491 OBP. He has hit safely 31 of his last 33 Triple-A games, slashing .400/.438/.520/.958 with nine doubles, two homers, 11 RBIs and 18 runs scored in that time. The run has shot his average up from .190 to .333.
CLASSICAL GAS: Mason Williams also enjoyed a night off on Friday. On Thursday he singled and delivered a sac fly as the leadoff man. Since he was activated off the SWB disabled list on Aug. 13, he has slashed .359/.395/.436/.831, going 14-for-39 with six RBIs, three walks and nine runs scored in 10 games.
THE TOTAL PACKAGE: Catcher Eddy Rodriguez cracked a pair of doubles last night. After the game, he was honored on the field as the CommUNITY Player of the Year for his outstanding service to the greater SWB area.
GREAT CESAR'S GHOST: Cesar Puello went 3-for-4 including a bunt single. In 13 games played this month he has slashed .375/.394/.656/1.050 with a pair of homers. His 18 stolen bases rank second on the team and have him just outside of the IL's top five in just 72 games played.
LORD I WAS BORN A GAMELING MAN: Ben Gamel went 0-for-4 as the IL's top-active hitting streak stalled at 15 games. Gamel (June 29-July 17) and Refsnyder (Apr. 26-May 12) share SWB's longest hitting streaks of the season, a pair of 16-gamers. During his latest streak he went 24-for-63, slashing .381/.403/.556/.959 with 12 RBIs. The All-Star ranks among the IL's best in average (6th, .310), hits (T-2nd, 146), steals (5th, 19) and run scored (1st, 76).
OFF THE RAILS: The paid attendance of 9,369 made for the team's 19th fixed-seat sellout of the year...Four SWB hurlers, Richard Bleier, Johnny Barbato, Tyler Webb and Jonathan Holder combined to record 14 strikeouts...Pete Kozma hit in the two-hole for the third time as a RailRider...Both Gamel and Solano have a chance to become the second SWB player in the Yankees era to lead the IL in hits...Jose Pirela (163) accomplished the feat in 2014.
