Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
WEATHER WEARY: Thursday's scheduled series opener was postponed due to inclement weather. It marked the RailRiders' first postponement of the season, but Pawtucket's third. The teams will make it up with a Saturday twinbill at 4:05 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT: As Chase Whitley (2-0) stymied the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on the mound, the RailRiders put together clutch hits to back their starter in a 3-2 triumph on Wednesday night at PNC Field. The RailRiders took a 2-1 advantage in the "IronRail Series" while Lehigh Valley dipped to 4-10 on the year. SWB has won five of its last six.
SLADE'S BLADE: Slade Heathcott posted a 4-for-4 night on Wednesday with a double, a bunt single, an RBI and a run scored. The athletic outfielder has six hits in his last seven at-bats.
STOP, THIEVES!: Wednesday's finale with Lehigh Valley ended when Brian Bogusevic was caught stealing second base with red-hot three-hole hitter Maikel Franco at the plate. It marked just the second man nabbed by the SWB battery in 16 tries on the season. Despite an .125 caught-stealing efficiency, SWB does not live in the IL's caught-stealing basement. Buffalo has yet to nab a man in six attempts. Indianapolis (16), Charlotte (17) and Norfolk (18) have allowed more total steals.
WOOD CARVINGS: The RailRiders pitching staff leads the IL with 130 strikeouts, a pace of 9.2 per game. Bryan Mitchell paces the club with 14. Chase Whitley and Diego Moreno follow close behind with 13. SWB owns five more strikeouts than Norfolk (125) and seven more than Gwinnett (123).
LEFTORIUM: The Pigs' Wednesday starter, Adam Morgan, marked the first of three straight lefty starters for SWB foes. The RailRiders have hit (.253/.311/.370) against right-handed hurlers and (.250/.336/.298) versus southpaws. Six of SWB's 12 position players are left-handed hitters. The team is 1-1 when foes start lefties.
MANIC MONDAY: It took 15 innings on Monday night at PNC Field, but the RailRiders edged the IronPigs, 4-3. Nick Noonan delivered the walk-off winner with an opposite-way single to left. It marked the RailRiders' longest game by innings since the franchise-record 20-inning affair on July 25, 2013 against Toledo, a 2-1 win. At 4:13, it was the longest game by time since a 3-2 home loss to Louisville took 4:59 and 14 innings on Aug. 13, 2014.
WHISTLE BLOWING: The RailRiders finished 2014 with a 7-1 record at McCoy Stadium. They became the first SWB team to log a winning record at Pawtucket since the 2009 squad went 5-3. The 2007 unit set the gold standard for the franchise with its 7-1 performance at McCoy Stadium. The RailRiders also took the overall season series at 11-5 for SWB's best regular-season showing versus the PawSox since the 2009 unit went 12-4.
OFF THE RAILS: The RailRiders are fresh off their first back-to-back series victories since winning sets at Syracuse and Lehigh Valley from June 26-29, 2014...They have not won three straight sets since besting Buffalo, Lehigh Valley and Rochester in succession from July 4-10, 2013...SWB improved to 3-0 in one-run games on Wednesday...Every other IL team has lost at least once by a single score.
