Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The script has been flipped. The Toledo Mud Hens were the lone IL team playing below .300 baseball while the RailRiders boasted the best road record in the minors when they arrived at Fifth Third Field on Monday. Last night, the Mud Hens beat SWB for a third straight day, 4-1. The RailRiders' season-worst fifth straight loss dropped them to just a game above .500. They have lost seven of nine while the Mud Hens own their first four-game winning streak of 2013.
ROAD WOES: The RailRiders had lost just two of their 12 road games this year entering this series. Last night's loss means SWB has suffered more road losses on this set than it had all year. It also makes for the squad's first true road series defeat since dropping two of three at Lehigh Valley from July 2-4, 2012. SWB has not been swept in a true four-game road series since June 18-21, 2012 at Louisville.
SERIESOUS OFFENSE: The Mud Hens entered the series hitting a league-worst .220 while averaging 3.26 runs/game. They have plated 26 runs through three games (8.7/game) on the series while hitting .390 (41-for-105) including 13 extra-base hits. Toledo's team batting average has jumped to .233, though that is still the worst mark in the IL. The next-worst clip belongs to Charlotte (.239). The Mud Hens also rank last in slugging percentage (.356) and on-base percentage (.304).
WHAT'S THE DELLIN?: Another RailRider is on his way to the show. Recently-converted reliever Dellin Betances was recalled by the Yankees before the game. Brett Marshall, who made his Major League debut on Wednesday night, was optioned back in a corresponding move. Betances has MLB time as a September call-up in 2011 (2G/1GS, 6.75 ERA). Add Betances to the list that now includes Marshall, David Adams, Preston Claiborne, Corban Joseph, Vidal Nuno and Austin Romine as non-rehabbers that advanced from SWB to the Bronx this season. Adams, Claiborne, Joseph, Marshall and Nuno had no prior MLB time. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last season in which as many as five Yankees made their Major League debuts within the team's first 40 games was 1995: RHP Brian Boehringer, SS Derek Jeter, RHP Jeff Patterson, LHP Andy Pettitte and RHP Mariano Rivera.
THE OLD SWITCHEROO: Jeff Farnham was a last-second addition to the starting lineup last night. Bobby Wilson was a late scratch from the original order. Farnham took his spot both behind the plate and in the eighth position. Farnham singled and walked on a 1-for-3 day. He was also credited with a pair of caught stealings and provided a dynamic swipe tag to nip Ramon Cabrera at the plate for an inning-ending 3-2 double play on Danny Dorn's grounder in the third.
M&M: Mark Montgomery recorded a strikeout in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. The 22-year-old right-hander also stranded two inherited runners. In 12 appearances and 20 innings of work this season, the former Longwood University star has recorded 27 strikeouts (12.2 / 9 IP) and has held the IL to a .200 batting average. He has also stranded five of his six (.833) inherited runners.
HOW THE WEST WAS LOST: SWB fell to 2-9 against IL West squads. In addition to its 0-3 record against Toledo, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is 1-3 versus both Indianapolis and Columbus. After tonight's tilt in Toledo, the team journeys to Columbus for a four-game set starting tomorrow night at Huntington Park.
OFF THE RAILS: Brennan Boesch physically joined the team for the first time and went 0-for-5 with a strikeout in his RailRiders' debut...He was assigned No. 32...According to The Star-Ledger, Yankees' manager Joe Girardi believes Joba Chamberlain needs at least one more rehab appearance before he can return to NY..."Ribcages are tricky," Girardi told the paper. "A lot of times you'll see where guys can actually throw or swing, but you don't feel that they're at 100-percent full power. We don't think he's quite there yet. We're going to make sure he's ready."...Melky Mesa's first-pitch homer in the seventh extended his hitting streak to seven games...He is hitting .414 (12-for-29) with 5XBH, 5RBI and 5R during his run.
