Portland Winterhawks News Release
Portland, Ore. - The Portland Winterhawks, proud member club of the Western Hockey League, are proud to share that alumnus Sven Bärtschi has signed a three-year contract with SC Bern of the Swiss National League.
Bärtschi spent the 2021-22 season with the Vegas Golden Knights organization, playing one game with the big club and 44 games with its American Hockey League affiliate Henderson Silver Knights.
The Bern, Switzerland native signs a three-year deal with his hometown team after a decade of playing professionally in the States. Bärtshi scored 138 points (66G-72A) in 292 NHL games playing for the Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks and Vegas Golden Knights, and he dressed in 235 AHL games since 2012, putting him over 500 career professional games played in North America.
Bärtschi was selected seventh overall by the Winterhawks in the 2010 CHL Import Draft and he played two seasons in the Rose City from 2010 to 2012, leading the Winterhawks to two Western Conference Championships. Despite only making two postseason runs, Bärtschi sits top ten on the Winterhawks all-time playoff scoring list.
The high-scoring winger led all WHL rookies with 34 goals, 51 assists and 85 points during his first year in Portland and was named to the 2011 CHL Top Prospects Game. He came back the following season and represented the Hawks as one of their alternate captains, ranking tenth in league scoring with 94 points in just 47 WHL games.
While playing in Portland, Bärtschi was selected 13th overall by the Calgary Flames in the 2011 NHL Draft. His contract with SC Bern will begin during 2022-23 season.
